I've been looking for an engine project for a while, when this one fell into my lap. I've never done one before and have just started reading about them. Just finished the Builders Handbook by Frank Oddo, so am starting to learn the vocabulary. Here she is. Any info that jumps out is appreciated. Oh, and that's also a Sears Craftsman buzzbox that I picked up! It was a good day
Nice. Have fun doing it. Watch your spending and do it right. I'm picking up another flathead block next weekend and am hopeing it isn't a boat anchor.
Based on the heads and water pumps it came out of a truck. But who knows what's inside given all that could have been changed over the years. Maybe you'll get lucky and it'll have a 4 inch Merc crank.
You're kinda screwed now cause next thing you know you'll have 3 or 4 of em. Very first thing to do is pull the heads and start looking for cracks. I just looked again and maybe somebody has done that. Look for those cracks running from cylinder over to valve seat.
QUESTION: "How come every flathead I see that has been laying around is painted red ?" ANSWER: Because wheels were often painted red. However, there are exceptions.
