Duct tape held cardboard on to cover opening. Then, multiple covers in heated garage.

Half of what Barris said was fictitious. Should have talked to Jim.

Jim added tons of electronics to GS2. Without Jim, both versions would be crap. Jim was the genius behind both versions of that car.

Jim is the genius behind the cars. Barris never touched GS2. There was no fish market paint. Read Rik Hovings work. He has the true story with evidence and receipts.

Thank @LGW13 for connecting some dots and crossing some t's...this scenario has been played out time and time again throughout life around this automotive universe beyond the daily driver.

Yes some involve more dollars but every one of us has to close the door eventually. To some they live it right to the very end. I expect most of us would do the same if we could.

I wish a lifetime of health to everyone enjoying what we celebrate and experience here as nothing lasts forever.

After a brief read thru @Rikster's story I glean Jim was as I thought successful despite the Sahara's demise, however the closing of that chapter still has a element of sadness looming over it and I am sure he looked at it there in the garage with much emotion.

I would like to extend belated condolences to the Skonzakes family on the passing of Jim...especially his widow who played an important part in this legacy we are discussing.

This is only the beginning of another part of this vehicles journey through time.

The tape was there because he covered it with blankets to keep the cats out. The tape was left on because they feared it would remove paint if they tried to peel it off

It seems odd how cars and people and money are placed on pedistols these days when so much is going on in the world today ?
We all die in the end and then the race is over and things go on.

Got to keep on living despite what ails the world...some can buy from a pedestal and hammer while others buy from classified ads.

We have freedom which was fought for and this is the reality with death by natural causes the biggest threat...if we are lucky...

I guess buying things can however be related to ones loss of connection to the hobby which is like you said a form of luxury of many levels and even an honor or compliment to those who crafted the objects depending on what it is.

  24. Thanks for the more detailed pics!
Besides the duct tape it does not look that bad, the interior needs the Italian grandmother plastic removed
Would be nice to know how bad it all really is, or is it mainly just cosmetic.
Would also be nice if someone could weed through the stories and get all the facts from the beginning to the end on this piece of history. Just like anything or anyplace with significant history everyone wants to be attached to it.
Read the new owner will not touch the paint.
Not sure exactly where I stand on this one with leaving it or restoring g it? I think refurbishing it at this point would be a great start
Having it sit like this in a garage for another 40 years would be a complete waste.

Thanks for the quick reply! No comment from me, I like cars built before 1941. Bob

I think we are blending both cars here

I believe that the paint comment was in reference tot he Kookie Car paint, not the GS

look here for the story on the GS

If the current owner is reading this, a safe way to remove the tape would be to soak it in regular strength wax and grease remover. Mineral spirits also works but would take longer to remove the residue in some cases. Neither solvent would hurt the paint, and the best method is to soak rags and let em sit on the tape for a few minutes. Seems like a day's work and all would be well, although some areas may come off anyway due to temp extremes while stored. Worth the effort.

I stood right next to it and looked hard at the seats. the material is Frieze and is coming apart under the plastic. there are many areas where the thread holding it together is disintegrated and the seams are coming apart. The Frieze itself is disintegrating also. This is just my opinion and really means nothing, but the car should be restored. there is not any part of it especially the paint that is good enough to leave. I was somewhat disappointed to see how crooked and wavy the fins are and how all over the place all the gaps on the doors, hood and trunk were.....and how warbly the bubble top is when you look thru it
