Wanting to put a graphic on my car and finally got around to it. Looked for fonts with a 50's to early 60's vibe. Found one and downloaded (free) from dafont.com. Made up what I wanted on the computer to be 5" X 7". Sent the file to Decalboy.com and had a stencil made for enamel paints and had it in about a week. In the meantime, I took some vinyl stick on letters/numbers s that I had layin around the office and did some practicing/experimenting. Took a piece of glass from an old picture frame and cut out individual letters, tossed the letters and stuck the vinyl that surrounded them on the glass. Sort of mini stencils. I then proceeded to do each letter differently with different mixtures of the 1 shot. I used a stencil sponge, a cotton makeup applier for stenciling, regular stenciling brushes and artist oil brushes. I used straight 1 Shot and diluted with turpentine to different levels. I used the piece of glass so you can wipe it down with turpentine/paint thinner or razor blade it if you want to start over or do some more. Didn't care for any of the stencil tools....because it looked stenciled. Didn't like the 1 Shot straight, looked to new. Liked the 1 Shot diluted because it looks old - but when I mixed the turp with the 1 Shot, I kept getting tiny bubbles in the paint. Long story short I ended up using the artist brush - dipping it in the turp, blotting on a paper towel and then into the 1 Shot. I also mimicked the strokes of the letters just like doing it freehand.....I didn't just slather it on, so the letters have the brush strokes in them. It turned out just like I wanted. You can't tell by the pic but the letters have a little of the background showing thru and look aged.....not look like they were just painted. All together, about 35 bucks for both sides. Oh yeah, for the ("I can't stand fake speed shop names on hot rods.") crowd's comments.....my uncle opened Swede's Speed Shop in 1953 and this my homage to him.
Nice! It'll look good drivin' by at 40mph....... with the 'death wobble'........ and busted shocks....... in the moonlight. Good job.
