Your lack of exposure to this style might have something to do with your geographic location. Oklahoma, right? My grandpa(72 years old now) flaked the roofs of three or four of my uncle's cars from 1965 till around 1972. Not to mention a few friends' cars with flake, lace, and striping. He remembers seeing many drag cars of the time done up entirely in flake/panels/lace and told me that alot of people were taking cues from those cars and from the paint on customs(2-tones/pearls/fades) and kinda blending them together, resulting in the same style that you see gaining popularity today. I don't think it had much to do with cost at all. The look was all very common in the San Fernando Valley from the early to mid 60's on into the 70's. My gramps is still alive and kickin...droppin names and places like you can't believe. I wish he could still paint.
