Noone said you were building a race car - let alone a salt flats race car. However you shouldn't be so naive.

The reason why Hot Rods (or any other modified car for that matter) ever came into existance was because of guys who wanted to make thier cars faster. The best place in the world to find out just how fast your car had become (in the beginnings of the hobby - at the time YOUR truck was manufactured) was the salt flats. There were no drag strips - there were no NASCAR tracks - there were no other places to REALLY unwind a car at all - except for the occasional street race and the salt flats. In affect we are all building salt flat cars. Customs are a creative by-product of finding out just how far you could modify a vehicle, which came along YEARS after the first "Hot Rods" were built.

Why take the fenders off of a car? - For more speed at the SALT FLATS.
Why chop the top? - For more speed at the SALT FLATS.
Why lower your car? - For more speed at the SALT FLATS.
Why put a "modern" V8 into a car? - For more speed at the SALT FLATS.
Why channel a body over a frame? - are you picking up a pattern yet - For more speed at the SALT FLATS....

...it wasn't because it looked cool, it had a purpose.

Almost everything we do to our Hot Rods now is derived in origion from the guys who started this hobby in the first place - and they were doing it for the flats. So if your sick of the whole salt flats thing.....I don't know what to tell you.

And BTW, "salt flat guys" paint thier cars too. The ones who didn't (or haven't) - just ran out of dough because they spent all their cash on making the car faster.

I am not telling you that you have to do it one way or the other, but judging by your photo - that's not surf style, it's salt flat style (aka push truck). And I realize that there are no official "rules" to building cars, but I also know this: There is a reason why people don't mix/match styles.....

To each his own, but I think the truck stands on it's own. You don't need a gimmick to make it cool.

the reason people used flamethrowers was 'cuz under car neon hadn't been invented yet...they're equally 'cool'

  3. Are there any threads on this clown-thing, maybe in the tech archive? Dos and don'ts? Is it really legal? Sounds too cool not to be done!

    Clowns are scary.

  5. Lessee . . . hot rods were all about modifications for performance were they not?

Along with a few modifications for appearance as well.

Looking at your truck I see a performance oriented engine under the hood as well as some appearance modifications.
I'm guessing as well that more than a few people take notice when you drive by.
As well as those who will go out of the way to check it out when it's in a parking lot.

So tell me, why do you have to turn a performance oriented hot rod into a circus act?
    For even more attention?

The attention you get will probably put you into a classification you don't want to be in.

All of the above just my polite way of saying that flamethrowers are beyond stupid....

If you want my opinion, the only cool way to set up a flamethrower on that truck, is to mount this in the bed:

    flamethrower

    Yeah, that's my point...

It would be WAY scarrier than fire!

    BTW...

What IS the air-speed velocity of an unlaiden Swallow?

I can see it's "surf style." I agree that your truck is cool enough as it is.

Not all hot rods were built near salt flats, but I get your point. In 99% of the country there are no salt flats, so we had to drive in circles on dirt.

I don't know what everyone else said, I'm not going through all of it....
But if that was my truck and I wanted to add flamethrowers, here's what I would do....

First off, I would use a propane set up. Fucking up an engine for the sake of a whizz-bang-doo-dad ISN'T cool.

I would make some fake stack pipes, cause that straight back cab is crying for stack pipes, and I would pipe the propane through those.

Anyone can shoot flames across a parking lot. You'd be one of the few who could set a tree top on fire.

BTW...I really dig your truck. I've said it before, but its one of the only vehicles on earth I would trade my street freak Fairlane for.

  20. There is a qouple guys in our Car Club that have Flame Throwers. They have had then in for about 5 or 6 years. And they haven't hurt anything on there cars. Plus there isn't anything else that will draw a crowd, at a Rod Run better then Flames!!!

I loved your response to the conservatives. It made me laugh. I am the black sheep in my car club because I took a car that everyone wanted and made it what I wanted. I would like to put a flame thrower on my car but I have not the faintest clue where to start. Don't get me wrong my knuckels bare the scars of many a turned wrench, but this I have never learned. I want to be the first in my club to roast marshmallows. Can you explain how I can do this in detail. Thanx .

I never got the fascination with flamethrowers.

That little pickup looks impressive enough without runnin the risk of toasting something just for the "look at me" effect.

After many, my next Merc (on 85 Ford chassis) will be my daily as well. Most likely flamethrowers as I dont care so much about the lil 302s fate. Quicker I blow it quicker I can justify swapping to SBC...this was my last SBF.

I dunno bout that rant, but I thought this was a trad board. Traditional defined is....consisting of or derived from tradition; "traditional history"; "traditional morality" Never read this to be a "practical" car board, so more or less answering questions that weren't asked....

Now to be fair...the liberal "do what you want, please yourself, its your car" blah blah ::yawn::. Doesnt mean ppl on a traditional board are going to agree. The thread was put here for advice on things not to do, what to do....etc. Dude asked, dude gets answers/opinions..otherwise dont post on an internet board.

    My advice? Dont. Lame. Period.
