I was wondering whatever happened to this giveaway at the '84 Hot Rod Super Nats, the Flashback '57 Chevy that California Street Rods built. I am sure this car inspired many early fifties-mid sixties cars to be built in similar style, as Pat Ganahl had hoped for then.
We're going back to '84 now??? Wow! That was a sweet car- more like it should have been built- but it wasn't long before the pastel, tweed interior and ball-milled accessory crappers were the style. That car looked good then and would look great today.
I've wonderd for a long time what happend to the car. Does any one have any pics of the car then, or now? I haven't seen any pics of it since hot rod magazine printed them, I would love to see a pic of it again.
Been wondering about that orange beauty myself for a few years. Doesn't look like anyone knows or cares but the four of us. Now I know how Mark Morton & the 19 others feel.
Count me in...loved that car so much that my Dad and I built our own version. Stage one about '86 Final product unchanged except 100k plus miles since '87.
Looks like the little orange 210 impressed us Georgia boys. Seems like the car fell off the face of the earth after the give away. Haven't seen pics anywhere. IF YOU'VE GOT HER STASHED AWAY OUT THERE, WE'D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU!!!!
Old thread but I too always dug that car! I thinks we talked about it here a few years back but I forget teh details.
It was mentioned in Hot Rod a while back in a ?100 most influential? issue or something to that effect. Maybe Freiburger or Kinnan will chime in.....
That blurb kept coming up when I was searching the web. Sad that's all thats been seen or heard of it since '84. Would love to hear from Freiburger, Kinan or even Mr. Ganahal. I,ve been lusting after that thing since high school. Hope my '55 turns out 1/2 as nice.
A deceased friend of mine cloned that car and drove it a couple hundred thousand miles. During that time it had 3-4 engines and about a dozen 4 speeds. I always kidded him about being buried in it and he never argued. Sadly he was killed when the chuck on a cnc lathe he was operating exploded and the piece that was being machined came through the guard and hit him in the head, killing him instantly. I was one of about a dozen bidding on the '57 when his parents sold his cars and parts at auction but it quickly went way beyond what I could afford. I'd still like a '55 or '57 2dr as a daily but I'm runing out of time and have too many waiting in the wings. Frank
I built my '55 2-door hardtop in the '90-92 and it certainly inspired mine- sbc, 'vette valve covers, muncie M22, polished 'muricans, etc...
Nice h.t. I'm headed in a similar direction with mine. The flashback car influenced alot of folks. That's why I'd like to see it today, see how it's faired.
I loved that car too; that was IMO when Hot Rod was in it's prime thanks to Gray and Pat! I know I saw the '57 in some event coverage a few years ago in a magazine, so it has surfaced, but that was awhile ago. The only things that would date it today would be the "monochromatic" grill bar & chassis and the white letter tires, but other than that it was spot-on, and it made me fall in love with Halibrands. Anybody seen or remember the follow-up '64 GTO they built in a nearly identical style, except it was dark red? These cars probably marked the first instances in a magazine where 50's and 60's cars were being fully blown apart and restored "rotisserie" style; I think it changed everything in terms of how we build cars today; their importance cannot be overstated. Where are they now?
HOO RAH!! MONSTER FLAKE.......that's the first I've seen of the GOAT in 25 yrs. Thing looks awsome. I just hope the '57 faired as well.
I have the entire build series on the Flashback '57 including the final feature in Hot Rod. I fell in love with the car as soon as I saw it. Half the North wall of my garage is covered with blown up color copies of the pictures in that issue of HR. To me, that's the ultimate '57 Chevy; and it's stood the test of time VERY WELL! Lombardo & Crew did it right!!! I hope it's still around, and in the same condition.
I kept all 5 issuses as well for reference to begin with. Collected more later for a "wall hanging". Hope to hear something soon from whoever has her now.
Trying to keep this one at the top. We NEED to know what happened to this one. Come on HAMB.................don't let us down now. Frank
You guys have stirred my memory now. I too remember drooling (reading) about both of these cars when I was in high school. I would put the magazine in the open text book and read it during class.
