Well today had to put H20 pump in OT Tahoe but yesterday did get heads clayed and off to be trimmed a little....... I like using plumbers putty for the claying process as it sticks real good to parts and doesn't slide around on you.
hey carl, mind if i ask, what kinda clearances did you have when you clayed ? and what are you expecting when you get the heads back ? and what do you set your valve lash to ? thanks. i love your build, it ort to be a fun engine to drive.
Carl, that plumbers putty is a GREAT idea! Beats buying a ton of modeling clay that you lose after use!
Mike get ready to go for a ride in May at Eagle!! Mark.. had .120 on one head and .090 on the other so gonna take some off and shoot for arounf 9.2 CR when I am done.I still have to do some internal work on the heads but that is for another story......... The valves are .011 and .013 Trent yea I like using the putty works better than other stuff I have done and this way the grand kids can keep their playdough............
Hey Carl: Looking good so far - you're getting close. Would be nice to get to about .040 over the pistons with .060 to .080 over the valves at full lift. The turbulence caused by the tight piston squish has always seemed to be an important part of flathead horsepower. Are you starting out with a blower on this or NA? If it was NA, then having some higher compression definitely won't hurt yah. Keep cranking along! Looking forward to hearing it bark a bit!
Thanks Tim! Thanks Roc! CYL9 "Can't wait to see it all together." either can I, gettin excited now!! B&S: these heads are for the NA version, I have a set of hogged out 87CC 8BA heads for the 4-71 for future use if need be??????
OK! Heads are milled as to Carl's request. I took .020" off one and .050" off the other, both are .250" from the surface to the top of the dome. I'm with Dale on the quench area, I like to see right at .040" (in my Y-Blocks of course) I know Carl will have a bit more than this but in the future if he likes we can take more off. It's a lot harder to put it back on. Pix will post tonight as the computer at the shop wint take my camera card.
Here's the heads before re-surfacing, they have quite a step to them and a depth of .300" and .270" from the surface to the top of the dome. Carl told me that the top of the dome on the piston is .210 above the deck. That is quite a lot of space between the two and we haven't factored in a gasket yet. Since my earlier post I have talked with Carl and he decided he wanted another .020" taken off, this will give him .230" depth on both heads. Wth a head gasket that is compressed to .030" - .040" that will give a more desirable quench area.
Don't let out any secrets Tim!!!! Damn that looks a lot better after the cut gonna have to get into the garage and get the engine into the dragster!!!......Back to work fatso, ouch that hurts! Need to shave a few lbs offn the ol body for next years races I guess.............
Looking gooood Carl Seems like Flathead Fed's are popping up even several over here Builds like yours are an inspiration to us all! Thanks Br Kjell .............................. Taildragger&fenderless
We plan on it Lippy, by the way that is the coolest avitar I think I have ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
