What are you guys paying for glass?

I see Vintage glass on Ebay is right around 55 bucks ea. (windshield halves, doors) This is for a '47 Ford truck.

I like the idea of having the glass in hand to start versus taking it apart, dropping it off at the local glass shop and then waiting a week to get it back.

Why would you not support a local business? I just had a passenger side glass cut for a '59 T-bird at the glass shop up the street from me. Cost $30 (with no shipping) and they had it ready for me the next day. It was nice work and they said if there did happen to be any problems just bring it back and they would make it right. Would the eBay seller do the same? Keep it local!

How is waiting for alocaltyodoit worst than waiting for delivery. Generally UPS ground is 6 days.

With that said I purched a replacement from Chevs of the 40's for my 46 Chevy as I was ordering a bunch of other items from them also at that time.

    Good luck, Jim

  6. The glass you get in one day is not tempered. It's laminated safety glass. Don't slam your door.

I took the cracked passenger side glass from my '37 Chevy coupe to a local glass cutter. Cost me $48.00 including tax and I had it the next day.

HAMB vender quoted me $75.00 + shipping and that was with my Alliance discount. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't .....................

OK Guys, I figured I'd give you an UPDATE. :) I ordered glass for my '47 Ford Truck from Chris as recommended by the Hamb. It came EARLIER than Chris had promised and I was STOKED to put it in. Me and my son put the door glass in last night and the piece of glass sent was sweet! matched perfectly - made the job extremely easy. Today I unwrapped the windshield and much to my disappointment one piece had a small scratch in it - so I figure, "well HERE we go - I'm sure this is going to be a colossal PITA!" So I grabbed my camera spent 10 minutes getting it charged and another 5 to get an angle to actually show the scratch in a picture. All assuming I was gonna have to argue with Chris to get it "right". So I made what I thought was going to be a dreaded phone call - I get tired of doing this.....anyways I call Chris and ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS - NO ATTITUDE - NOTHING but pure professionalism and courtesy. Matter of fact by the time the call was over I felt bad calling because Chris was so nice.
So normally I am the cheap SOB looking for the absolute best price I can get - and maybe there were other possibly cheaper options - I dunno - I went with Chris because of his fabulous reputation here on the HAMB - clearly well deserved.
I can't say enough how well I think of Chris after this. Every business can have a hiccup from time to time (it's called being human) BUT !!! How they deal with the hiccups that REALLY define their character. I would buy from Chris in a heartbeat!

Well, This hasn't turned out quite so cherry after all. I am STILL waiting for that piece of glass. Never again.

  11. Well, I gotta ask. Have you talked to Chris since may?

Yes, been in contact on a regular basis. I'm beyond frustrated at this point. Like I said NEVER AGAIN.

  13. I went to a local glass dealer a couple of months ago when I had to replace a side window because of deer damage. He wouldn't be able to cut it for 3 weeks and wouldn't give me a price until it was cut. (quite arrogant about it) I took my pattern when I left and will not go back. (I've done business there for 30 years) On the way home I stopped at a plastic warehouse and picked up a drop of polycarbonate, took it home and had a window an hour later. I know it is temporary, but I needed the window in a hurry
Now I have to find a new glass cutter!

  14. I bought glass from Bobs Classic Glass -also an alliance vendor on here -no problems , quick turn around good price-no problems

  15. I got my flat glass from Auto City Classic, $46 for the door glass and $22 for the vent windows, great quality and took maybe 6 days to get it to me. It has that green Ford tint to it as well.

I had all the glass for my 46 Olds sedanette done by a glazier friend down here, Tinted and $483.00. 2 x laminated windscreens and 1/4 vents, 2 x safety glass front doors and rear 1/4s. Unobtainium down here . Shipping down under is too cost prohibitive and risky.

Do you still have the scratch ed piece?

  18. I've also dealt with Chris,
Sometimes deals don't go the way their "reputation" would have you believe
    that they will.
    Just sayin'

  19. Sometimes it is wise to delete the "good ol' boy" factor out of the equation. I got what I needed for my glass with a couple of mouse clicks and that feeling of that invisible hand taking money out of my pocket. It took all of maybe 45 seconds.

Standard Wilson here in K-town cut a single piece ( one side) of windshield for my '46 Chevy coupe ( I dropped and cracked the first one from Chevs of the 40s) and I picked it up the next morning for under $50. Now that's what I call service!

I appreciate all the suggestions for other HAMB vendors, but unfortunately it will be a long long time until I try that route again.

BTW here's pics of the "good" windshield piece not exactly the "jewelry quality" edges that were described :

I'm thinking that cutting laminated glass is yet another skill I need to acquire.

I have all mine cut locally by a glass shop. For a 40 coupe it's about $400 for a complete set tinted and very nice quality. Bought a set a few years back from a place that was supposed to be great. None fit right and had to get another set-that's when I went to the local guy--he has done 6 sets for me since--no issues.

one advantage of the local guy is that you can get quick satisfaction (or dissatisfaction as the case may be) if something goes south. None of this waiting around, exchanging phone calls, etc.

I also for some reason never trust anyone's patterns, I like to get an old original window to cut the new one to match. Or make my own from masonite if there is none, or the car has been modified. and of course I get the rubber first, then make the pattern

That's a great point - I have original glass in the truck now. I can yank it out over winter and just have it copied right - since I've waited this long it's not that big a deal to wait a little longer.

I paid almost $100 for my T Bucket flat glass at a local shop. It seemed high, but the receptionist was cute and a flirt, so.......
