Has any one had the push rod that works the fuel pump on a 8ba 50 model ford flat head wear enough that it would not work the pump? Don
Might want to ask this on the main board since it would be very on topic Don. Or, maybe one of the moderators could move the thread over there.
A worn rod will definitely prevent the pump from applying enough pressure. With the many styles of afternarket intakes that mount the fuel pump at different heights will also cause this issue. Mount the rod and measure the maximum travel. Compare it with the distant needed to fully push the pump arm. Many have welded heights to make the rod long enough.
Questions like this are handled daily on The Ford Barn 'Early V8' forum. Go ahead and sign on. They are not neither averse or snobs to performance mods. What ever it takes to make flat head power. The rest of the car ( body chassis ) they prefer original. Ask, you'll find answers you need.
Yes, so I made an adjustable one, from the left over part and a bolt. I got told that it would not work, so instead of discussing that, which incidentally is still working, try this……... https://www.speedwaymotors.com/1949...d-for-Flathead-V8-10-062-Inch-Long,52292.html I have also heard about the coin or washer put under it, - an old timers trick. .
When I was a teen, an old mechanic welded onto the end of the push rod, then ground smooth. Welded part installed up, and I had fuel again. I never had a problem in the next year I had the car!
The rod does wear down. I would also rebuild or change out the fuel pump, especially if it's the original pump. They're not very expensive and a new rod is around $20, depending on where you get it from.
