There are a lot of guys wanting to know what an engine should cost, but few see that it is mostly about buying a good block and the rest is just what happens after you spend your money. I made a deal on my block that it was $100 and would come up with another $100 if it p***ed inspection. It p***ed but still may need a sleeve to cure a rust bore. Going 3/8 would clean it up but a bit much for my needs. Acid dip reveals a lot. Good luck: Fred A

depends on how much time and energy you want to put into finding the best/cheapest engine. i looked at many cheap engines, bought a couple, but never found the "crack free" block. when a Mercury engine became available with a crack free block with the 4" crank, i quickly paid $700 for it. search over. no more wasted time. no more wasted trips. maybe you are luck enough to have people search you out to offer these engines and deliver them to you, i have to find them. once again, search over...jack

I found a 53 Merc. the first time out, I payed 800.00 for a old project 51 ford 2 door sedan pulled the motor and gave the rest of it to a friend that let me use his shop. The engine sat for 20 years + it had oil in the cylinders and anti freeze in the radiator and block. The engine runs fine. There is a Hot Rod God !!!!
