This is how the new quest begins:

I shipped the spare good block to Pops29 today, and the cam blank to Dema Elgin.

Pops and Dale will start a new main girdle design, with the plans of being able
to handle more boost and higher RPM's.

Dema will grind a roller cam-I'd hate to lose a lobe or mushroom base off of our
    current cam!

John K is starting his plans for aero-the Flatcad will look drastically
different next year in comp coupe.

Wrenchbender and I will get started on suspension-front axle and possibly a new
rear diff, dry sumping the tranny and diff, body work and paint.

I've been accused of being loud, arrogant, and a braggart. Well, that may be so, but I'm also known for backing my words. I can promise you this: we are going to achieve 200 mph with this engine at some point, if it's humanly possible!

Time slips Buddy, its not bragging when you show time slips. They tell the story by themselves.

Well, it's time to start thinking about next year-tearing the engine down for a rebuild, and reworking the car itself.

....but, the Ohio Mile is only about an hour from Dale's house! We're going to go and see what we can do on asphalt, since we will be so close anyway!

Dale's XXO/BVGALT class is open, and the record in XXO/BVGCC is 130.756 MPH, set by 'Scrap Iron', owned by Bobby Minis.

Wish us luck, or come by and see us!

  8. Time to rally the Mid-West troops - lets get ready for some more racing boys and girls! Seems like the right way to end this years racing season - then start the work/prep for next year.

Well update this thread to keep you all posted and we WELCOME all of the Hamb to come and see us run - your support has been fantastic and provides additional motivation to our journey.

  9. I'm no machinist BUT.....how possible would it be to make the main caps and the girdle one piece? It seems to me it would provide a lot of cross-bracing that you can't get with caps and girdle all moving independently of each other.

Peddro, that is exactly what we are looking at designing-with a few 'extra' twists!;)

We would be HONORED to have you in the pits with us!

BCCHOPIT is sending us a new straight 'setup' axle, and sent this pic of the ends he is fabbing.

Once we know exactly what we need, the setup axle will go back to him, and he'll build the final axle.

    Thanks Bill!

I offered up a suggestion awhile back along the lines of a high mounted straight axle suspended on hidden torsion bars. As a corolary to that, since the axle tube isn't finished yet, you might look at dropping the axle nearer to the center of the car-like right at the width of the frame. That would allow the frame to drop without cutting on the crossmember but the portion of the axle outside the frame/body would be straight and still cheat the wind. Just a thought. Good luck whatever you do..

Dale, thank you for both suggestions!

Both have serious merit, and we are contemplating both. I'm confident that we will follow one of them, or at least a modified version. I'm leaning towards the straight axle with torsion bars, but really need to get the straight axle with the car, and discuss everything with Wrenchbender and WZ Junk.

Keep the ideas coming, as they are VERY helpful!

BCCHOPIT (Bill Carlson) has the axle ends trimmed and everything is ready to ship!

I have to give Bill props-this guy is great! When he found out what we wanted the axle for, he offered to send us this setup axle, so that we could figure out exactly what we need. Not many guys go the extra distance for a customer anymore, but Bill sure does!

Do me a favor, and give Bill a shout if you need any axle work! http://waccustoms.com or http://bcchopit.com

  16. That is awesome - It is rare to find customer service like this . . . somehow we've been fortunate with MANY of our vendors.

As we've said many times - we could not be successful without the people on our team, their products (ones that we make and others) and the amount of shared knowledge, help and goodwill that we receive from the HAMB and the LSR communities.

We're fortunate to have ALL you guys!

Dale, I should have said that, but could not possibly have said it any better than you did!

Membership and entry fees are paid-we're ready to rock the Ohio Mile!:D

  19. Buddy your giving me ideas for an xxo blown Packard, doing the main caps and girdle like you are discussing. Love reading this!

    Lol! Patience....:D

Brian, that would be a very cool project! I'd sure like to see you do it!

When I ordered the rods and crank from Crower, I inquired about that Rich-rumour I heard was that he was working on an OHV version. Either way, he said he may have, but he didn't remember it.

BCCHOPIT Bill Carlson is a great guy he let me borrow his small diameter dies so I could build the cage for my Lakester. He also helped with various ideas during my build. He has visited my shop many times keeping track of my progress. Billys daily driver is a fenderless Model A coupe powered by a warmed over banger four cylinder the car is so tradtional it still has mechanical brakes.

  23. Sounds very interesting Brian - would love to see more vintage engines running at Bonneville and chasing records/dreams. If you ever need any input on ideas, let me know.

    Hey Guys....
Your set up axle should show up any day now. Shipped out UPS Monday.
I add to your box one of my angle finder pads. With the gasser guys I tack them on when I build the Axle but with yours and my luck if I welded it on it would be in the way.
So you guys will have to tack it on.
Set the axle in a vice and set your king pin angle @ 0 and then put the pad on the tube and 0 it out and tack.
Now when you have all your spindles and wheels on the car you will have a place to sit the angle finder. Takes all the guess work out where your Caster is set.

This is a set up Axle the tube as been cut welded and ground on many times so have a blast you can't
    hurt it.

I think you missed the part of SET UP axle. The ends are only tacked in.
When they get something they like I will make them a new one based of the set up axle. I will slide the ends into a nice new made in the USA 4130 tube and yes the ends will have
plug welds in the real axle.

    Thanks Bill!

Chasing record speeds with a vintage car is similar to nature, in the fact that there is a never ending metamorphosis happening. Much the same as a caterpillar morphs into a butterfly, a classic car changes into a sculpted steel contraption that looks as if it belongs in the movie 'Transformers'.

It's really an evil necessity, because pure horsepower only goes so far, then racers are forced to make aero changes due to drag, lift, etc. Going fast may not look as cool as going slow, but going fast IS cool!

Love it or hate it, this is a rendition close in appearance, to what the FlatCad will likely look like in our quest for 200 mph. Aero speed mods will be held on with dzus fasteners, so that they can be removed in the /BVGALT class.

Photo-shopped by MOGuy. Thanks Steve and John!.
