I recently acquired a 40 merc motor. I want to make sure everything is ok before I put it in my car. I pulled #1 and #5 pistons. Inside the rod big ends is shiny and nice, crank journal is shiny and nice. Outside the bearing insert is smooth and looks good, BUT inside the bearing insert the surface is rough, it has texture, it almost looks like it is sand blasted. I've never pulled flathead floating bearings before. This couldn't be normal. Sorry no pictures. What do the experts think? Thanks Harley

The old manuals gave the size round dowel to place inside while miking across the dowel and the bearing and the final measurement to be standard size. Of course you also gotta mike journals to determine if ground undersize or worn. Not sure what you are saying about a "blasted" finish now on ID.
Someday I'm gonna round up all my old manuals and make a shelf someplace just for them!

The sandy texture says there was dirt in the oil. Better check the others too.

What you are describing doesn't sound normal, but in this case a pic would really help.
