I know, I know..... the horror...But we're talking antique firetruck here. Duels really aren't an option. It has a stock 85hp, 21 stud Flatty in it currently breathing through some muffler-less 2" flex pipe slid over the stock Y-pipe that has been on there for about 50 years. It sounds and looks pretty ratty to say the least. I have no problem sectioning pipe bends and welding them to make up a new exhaust system. I'm leaning toward a Porter muffler, I just can't make my mind up on the proper tubing size. What do you guys think?
Fire trucks didn't usually have mufflers - the noise warns of their approach. In our area, average exhaust would run to the front of the right rear dual & curve out & down, unmuffled through a large pipe.
That's what I have seen too, though most of them around here are muffled. I don't mind some bark, but it's a bit much now. I do plan on exiting under the running boards in front of the passenger side rear tires.
It seems 1 3/4" is used the most. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/flathead-ford-exhaust.456712/
