Here is whats on the engine stand, a 1951 merc flathead, 286 ci, 4 inch merc crank, weiand 4x2 intake, with 4 stromberg 48`s,jetted @.043, Kong Jackson twin plug heads and a nash twin 8 distributor, will be backed up with a 4sp transmission and a qc rearend, any suggestions for a cam from the experts out there ???? pics in my photo album tonight if I can figure it out LOL......
Check with "pete1" here on the HAMB. Old school cam grinder. He knows as much as anyone. For what you have so far "Potvin Elimenator" comes to mind
X 2 on checking with Pete. I just built a 286 8BA and used a 1007B grind on Pete's advice. Its a pretty good choice it pulls realy well on bottom and midrange very strong smooth power, great for street driving I love it. (BTW if you get one from Isky you better check it with a degree wheel to make sure its ground correctly) here is a video of what it sounds like
Russco, your 1007B sounds really bad, nice! 1934calkid, depends on what type of car, heavy or light? As stated before Pete1 knows. But you can consider a isky 404! .............................. Taildragger&fenderless
And 4x48 s are a lot for that size engine. 3x2 with 97s would be better. So you need a big cam for all those carbs. Next is the Nash distriburor im stock fom will only be good to arond 3000 Rpms find points with stiffer springs Is the block ported properly? I would go for a Potvin 3/8s and change the 48s for 81s
400 jr would be good in that mill. max 1 makes torque but i think would be better in a smaller/milder engine. you'll want to use isky/zephyr single springs (185 g) and the extra -length adjustable lifters. the 400 jr will give you beaucoup power above 40 mph!
Litterio L100 cam with 4-71 lung on a 286 cube engine... <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/QK4xMplEhJw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Rat
With all that neat stuff I would recommend an Eliminator unless you want to spend the money for a 404. The Eliminator will pull good right off the idle as long as you have good breathing.
hello , I have 289ci flat with 400 jr it's very good , but now would like to blown it with a 4.71 can I keep the 400 jr with the blown 4.71 ?
Sorry for the thread hijack - my understanding is yes you can - I have a blown flat motor (fully machined but not yet assembled) and a well respected flathead guy in Aust recomended and ground a 400 jr for me. He could have ground to pretty much any specs but this was his recomendation. I appreciate than some on HAMB may disagree but I think that there is so much confilicting advice on here about flat motors that my advice would be to pick a knowledgeble flathead person that you respect and trust then take their advice and only their advice. At least that way you will get a matched motor PS Your English is better than my French - I could not even say blown flathead in french
