Hey guys I’ve recently come across a set of heads that have peaked my interest. Price is right and a not so common head. However I want to pick your brains, the photos show some pitting in the mating surface. Is this a big deal? Do they need to be surfaced or would these still seal on copper gaskets? IMG_8647.png

I would take them to the machine shop, check for cracks and then have them surfaced. You will not get all of the pits but with copper coat and copper head gaskets , they should seal up.

Look's like Weiand... I would do some checking on what how much quench they would create, and if there is any room to have them surfaced.

have them checked for cracks. Some cracks are not visible to the eye.
Have them resurfaced if there are no cracks.
But do not take them to Wayne's in Riverside, Ca. I took a set of flathead heads to them and they told me that there were no cracks when we could see a crack on one head. I only wanted the good head taken care of.

After they are surfaced, the domes may need recut too. And maybe even the valve pockets. Won’t know until you check clearances on your particular engine.

I would prefer composition head gaskets with used heads (actually, any heads). Also, all I use is a thin coating of grease and avoid the complications that can be caused by using gasket sealers.
