I'm new to the forum and new to rods. I have recently acquired a 1949 8BA flathead that will be the heart of a 28-31 Tudor (don't have that yet) and looking or get acquainted with rodders in the area. First up would be to locate a good flathead friendly machine shop. I found J & M machine in Southborough MA on the net. Any of you got any others of note or feedback on J & M?
Millworks in Tewksbury is another for your list https://www.millworkshotrod.com But I'd suggest you get a book on Flatheads and try to get the thing to run without pulling it all apart if you can, on your own or with some buddies.
Helger Brothers in Little Compton RI. They build dragsters, vintage engines and are great guys with a deep parts stash.
J and M did the machine work on my 390 a few years ago. They seem to be the go to for the old motors. Where are you in Boston? You should check this show out next weekend. I'm gonna go. And a few others here. Should be fun. I've not met a lot of these guys face to face. (Shouldn't be too bad, how horrific can their faces be?) https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/gathering-of-the-faithful-2017.1076679/ Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Thanks guys! I will file this away. I did purchase the Tardel flathead books on building rods and his flathead book. Good reads. Clunker- I'm West of Boston in Sudbury and will try and make that show.
You're just a couple towns over from J & M, you should drop in there and check it out. Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
Larry's Power Groton Ct. Best damn engine shop in New England! Just check out their web and Facebook sites. There's nothing they can't build. Well worth the drive from Mass.
Like Adam said Helger bros speed shop in Little Compton RI. Ray will get you set up right and is a great guy.
You might send a PM to HAMBer <ronnieroadster>, I hear he builds a pretty mean flattie. He's somewhere in Connecticut. vic
