    CALLING Ford Flathead Tranny Gurus

I bought this off the local swap-n-shop---was advertised as a 39 Ford 3 speed. I have an extra flathead that should run, so I thought I put this on instead of the old truck 4 speed it has now. The old guy (yes, much older than me) that had it, said it was behind a chevy 350 in a 39 Ford sedan he bought years ago. It had a speedway adapter, that was already sold, but the trans is really in nice shape. See how they shortened and bent the shifter (lowbuck hotrod style).

Anyway, I found a little info on the web about it. It seems to be a heavy duty 3 speed for F1-F4 trucks from around 47-53 or so. Any old Ford tranny guys know what to use for the yoke at the rear or an adapter for a driveshaft yoke to make this work for a later 8 or 9 inch rear?

3 speed cause it has two rails.

    T-87 is a good trans.

You need a slip joint in the driveshaft. usually do this at the front end. A driveshaft shop will hook you up.

+1 for what gas pumper said. That will be a Spicer 1350 series joint.

    Thanks, guys.

I forgot about those joints. I should be able to handle that with the local drive shaft shop.

I run a T87D in my 48 F1. 2nd and 3rd are synchro'd. The darn thing is bullet-proof. They were set up originally for open drivelines so you should be good to go. The advice you've already got is right on.

My brother has one of those behind a 283 in his 41 Ford p/u. He's been abusing it for 30 years with out any problems. They are big, heavy and bullet-proof.

Also, my dad's got one in his 46 p/u and plans to put one in his F-1.

What you gonna use it in?

I have another flathead that was in a running truck when I drug it home. It came out of a 1950 Ford car. I'll stick it on that and then look at the 26 T front half touring I have sitting in the garage and ponder the possibilities. I have enough parts (front and rear axles and springs, double "z"ed frame, grille, F1 steering, windshield posts and frame, guide lights, 16 in wide whites on wires) to put a nice roller together, but I'm in the middle of another RPU project.
