Those of you that have Flathead engines or other type of engine and do not have aircleaners how often do you change your oil and oil filter. I myself change my oil every 500 miles including the oil filter cartridge type. Just curious. Thanks Frenchy
that probably good, I read some people doing it every thousand. Im just one of those people that uses air cleaners so I dont know from personal experience. Its sorta like those little hairs in your nose they help to keep you from breathing in bugs. I feel air cleaners are an important part of making an engine last but Im not trying to preach my beliefs on you.
I do have the small screens inside the carburetor throat. Other than that nothing else. I probably should make some type of nice aircleaners for the carburetors. Frenchy
my opinion on it, all is the dirt and stuff isnt really where the oil is. the dirt comes in the intake goes past the intake valve and into the cylinder bore on top of the piston. where the oil is below the piston held down by the oil ring. I could see how more dirt than usual could get into the oil because you consuming alot more and you need to change it frequently to keep your bearings safe. I just feel you going to wear out the bore really quick. Ive riden dirt bikes without aircleaners and they dont last long.
I second Noland on this....no filter is going to wipeout your rings faster..period. After your rings go away some then a little fuel contamination wll require you to change your oil sooner...I would change the oil in my street srip car about every other race or so...maybe excessive but oils cheap. I would only change the filter abolut 3 times a season or if I found any particles in the oil. If you like the look or the air scoops, try a foam filter between a couple layers of mesh. Just my 2cents... Race
No Air Cleaners = [insert your favorite ethnic etc term here] Bore Job!! Dumb idea here in dusty Arizona.
I once read an article on a GM test that said a 1/4" hole allowing unfiltered air to bypass the system caused a 50% reduction in ring life. That being said, try to find a filter of decent size...I wouldn't be surprised if some of the little 3 inch filters commonly put on flatheads cause a 50% drop in ring life too, from forced enrichment rather than abrasive dust...
I appreciate everyone comments. I am thinking to put in these small filters as been sold by Mac's Antique Auto Parts. Frenchy
