Would you guys look at this problem? Took the 37 out for a drive today. It ran well both yesterday and today. But this evening on the way home it started to cut out. My first thought it was either ignition or electrical. (Intermittent not consistent). But almost like someone turned off the ignition for a split second. By the time I was ready to pull it into the garage it was barely running and flooding. I opened the hood to find both 94s full of fuel and leaking at the bases. I first thought it was a float issue but both carbs flooding seem to eliminate that. This engine has a stock manual pump. I've never seen one of these increase in pressure. Is that possible? Or do you think it may be an ignition issue flooding the carbs? Holley 94s, Original ignition, 12 volt, 8BA. And don't mention that the original ignition sucks , this one has been on this engine for 10 years or more and ran well forever. Yes I rebuilt the distributor last year. Thanks!! Heres a pic for clarification,
Ya got a filter somewhere before the carbs? Old fuel sitting in it all winter? Pull the carb tops and look for crap in the bowls .
Was today warm? Check fuel lines end to end for proximity to exhausts, etc. Boiling fuel can go past the needle! If this looks good, see if it runs properly when cooled down, the repeats...maybe your setup would like manifold heat blocked in summer.
I'm leaning towards the powervalves disintigrating too. Possible that your regulator let go all at once... After you find out what the problem is, change your oil right away!
Thanks for the tips everyone. John, Yes I have a filter right after the tank. Carl and Uncle Max, Is it possible that both PV's would fail at the same time? How can I check them for leakage? Bruce, The temp was in the mid 's 60's here during the cutting out and flooding issue. When putting it away last night the car was setting and idling for a few minutes. That is when it really became flooded and barely made it into the garage bay. The fuel line setup has been in place on this engine for many years which may eliminate the possibility of heat issues. So it is possible the internal regulator on the stock pump could have failed? I can check that with a pressure gauge.
Even with filters, I occasionally find dirt getting thru-on mine it shows up in the glass bowl at the fuel pump. Intermittent miss is usually the signal . However, years ago I had both AFBs on a Chevy fill up on me and found all kinds of crap under needle valves.
Found it!!! Just an update to keep everyone in the loop and to express my gratitude. Well after going totally through the possible fuel issues (ie. Rebuilt and disassembled carbs 3 times and replaced one cast base ) I directed my efforts to ignition. Installed a new condenser and coil and BOOM. Everything is like new again! Upon the last carb disassembly I closely looked at the Power valve fit and gasket and replaced the gaskets with two good old ones that have a better diameter. The valve height was good.
