Like the ***le says, I have a question regarding a fuel pump. I just got my late father's 49 ford coupe back up and running. It has a mild 8ba flattie in it. It needed a new fuelpump so i bought the offenhauser one from speedway. While it works great, i think its either putting out too much pressure at 4psi, or my gauge on the fuel block is bad. The engine has 3 94s on it and when i shut it off, it drips fuel down the intake. When dad was alive, he bought one of those mr gasket round 1 to 5 psi regulators for the car. I installed it and have it turned down to 2 psi and the gauge still reads 3 or just a hair under 3psi. Should i get rid of the offy pump and just put a stock pump back on it? Dad never had an issue with a stock pump and he ran the car with and without the hood. I just put it back on. Would the heat be causing issues as well? Should I get phenolic spacers for the carbs? Thank you! 20240408_182726.jpg 20240405_205326.jpg

Iirc, generically speaking, aftermarket pumps have a spring that is too stiff. Either put original pump back on, or swap springs. My .02.

The ultimate solution to this (or any fuel or ignition problem on a Fotf flathead), is to simply send the offending unit to Charlie Schwendler in New York for refurbishment.

He is the go to guy for problems like this. Satisfaction guaranteed.;.

First thing, throw that pressure regulator as far as you can, it's a fire hazard. Get a low pressure Holly. Second thing is to send your fuel pump to Charlie in New York for a rebuild and pressure adjustment. The pump you bought is made in China and needs reworked to work properly. He will also replace the diaphragm which is made from material not compatible with our US gas and will start to leak after a short time. My Bob Drake Chinese pump was putting out over 6 lbs and Charlie set it to put out a consistent 2.5 lbs and replaced the top with an original plus a new diaphragm. Price was right.

I would go with the stock fuel pump. But that's what I like.

Thank you for the info. The car goes in Saturday morning to get the exhaust re hooked back up, and dumps installed. Then I'll send the pump to Charlie to work his magic. For the time being, I'm going to swap springs from the stocker to the offy.
