My 51 needs some love.. It's doing everything wrong that makes you think it's something else...with my arm problem... can't get into the engine with the fat fenders.. seems to have signs of both lean and fat... which make me think ignition>>>? changed the plugs,,, paid the price in pain for 2 nights..gaped at 25??? maybe need 30????maybe not enough dwell??? got no idea how the flat works... or what it likes..... if it was between the rails of a model A I'd mess with it....probley need to pull the radiator and grille for me to work on it... sooooo... probley better not to fuc with it..
I mess with the fuel system,... found the shut off valve pretty much plugged... cleaned all that... cleaned the filter before the pump.. real dirty....put a clear filter before the carb... lots of air.... got under and made sure every thing was tight... not more air bubbles... pumped the fuel in to a gas can.... good flow....I have a china virus fuel pressure reg.... took it off and it runs better..it has a carter elect. fuel pump... but its not very high pressure, so maybe not needed??? starts right up and idles well... but when you drive it you can feel it start lay'n down about mid throttle...
Might check voltage on the primary side of the coil. Low voltage there will cause it to lay down when under a load. So will a bad points gap (dwell).
I can't reach in there... and don't do well with my left as it also needs surgery... so just wanna find someone that knows these motors and can fix it , and knows what to fix... thanks for replying
If you are using one of those small paper air cleaners try running the engine through it's paces without it. Some of the filters are very restricting and can cause similar symptoms.
tryed to time it.... no mark on the pulley... what it does is fire cracker through the exhaust...but thats slowly going away.... figured it sat so many yeaars valves might be sticking... so put a quart of marvel in the oil..... seems more I drive it the better it runs.. but stll real lazy.....does wanna run through the gears very fast...there's a hole lotta could be's and probley abunch of them all at once... I tried moving the timing around... very hard with only one hand...
exhaust pop is usually fat,.. weak spark or sticking valves...I think I also need new plug wires??? cap, rotor, and points look new ???? and now gapped to 16 tight
what’s the saying ? 90% of ignition problems are carb…. You don’t say anything about the carb condition or type. If all the other fuel related stuff was blocked up , what about the carb ? Blown power valve ? Fuel starvation ? Carb ?
Damn I wish I was closer to you I’d be the first one over there helping a brother out. Surely we have a few members close to you that can help out even if they aren’t a flathead expert. What’s the worst thing that could happen, make a new friend and have a few good stories about “remember when we tried to get the old girl running and blew it up instead “
