i've found this flathead in a junkyard for a hundred bucks...complete from pan to intake with dizzy and ******,and i'd like to know more about it...the junkyard guy said it came from a merc, but i don't want to just take his word.i've checked the date code in the flathead jack catalog(cause that's what i had handy) and if i read it right,it's a 51...the heads have EAB6049 on them,i think...hard to read...then an 87H: the top of the bellhousing has a 3701 or a 37D1,kind of looked like a d,but backwards...it has an aluminum timing cover and 8RT water pumps, but i guess any of that stuff could have been changed over the years...don't know if it's worth it,or if it turns, how long he's had it...he's kind of grumpy,so i thought i might try to find out what it was before i bugged him enough to piss him off..he's about the only cool junkyard we have left
EAB is 52-53 ford head designation. Only way you can check if it's a merc is to measure the stroke. It will be 4" Merc, 3 3/4 Ford. Butch
i kind of figured that,i guess heads and stuuf could have been changed...it has a lumpy oil pan also, not like the truck pans i have, oil drain plug on the back corner...even if it's not a merc,i might be interested for that price
What is the code on the top of the block? EAB would be correct for an early production 1952 block built in 51 if that code is correct. Mercs 52-3 had EAC heads but many put on the EAB heads for a quick 10-15 hp boost.
wanna say it is S 8 E 286...the s looked like it was stamped really light That doesnt compute. BUT if it is S8B it would have been ***embled 10/8/52 which would be correct for either very late 52 model year or an early production for a 53 model. Hey, I've got a set of EAB heads. Didn't know they would make that much more power...gonna try it! The Merc used bigger chambers to keep the cr down to the Ford, prolly since the gas still ****ed back then. If you give them a .060" cleanup shave you will be into the low 8's for cr. And that is still using a fat .050" composition gasket.
