Hey gang, Im in the process of nutting out my carburetion needs on my 258. Id like to run vintage carbs to complement my overall look. My feeling is that 2 97's wont supply the right fuel curve to my combo even though its modest in cubic inches. Even if I jet em up, the venturi size will be small from a cfm/WOT perspective and so that will = LEAN UP TOP !! I know Stromberg 48's flow more therefore may be an option...anyone used em on a blown combo? I dont wanna run more than two carbs so if the 97's arent enuff, what other options other than the 48's do we have? After some scoping around, I found that the Stromberg WW series, four bolt base carbs used here on our local GM products in the early 70's (non smog versions) would be suitable. They are dirt cheap here, (scored 3 for nada, cheeper than the Rochester 2G/C carbs), kits are real easy to source and they are basic, tunable 2 BBL carbs that are plentiful here. CFM's vary from 250 to 280 cfm depending on which application the carb was sourced. I know these carbs were available in the US from the 50's onward on Ponchos, Buicks, Cads, Studes and MoPar rides too. Anyone used these carbs on a blown application ? Im a bit wary of using just the 2 97s as I feel they might be marginal over 4000 rpm or so. Any thoughts ? Rat
How about stromberg 48's "170 CFM" with some adjustable mains or you could always do plug chops and drill your own jets.
Rat,I run a 650 double pump holly. Not as tradishnal as I would like but needed some thing that would work.I also have a set of real rodchester 3x2 carbs that we fabed a manifold for that. I think will work fine.Need time to run set up and work out bugs.
i'll let you have my WW that came on my 54 dodge if you want it. it worked when i pulled it anyways. been sitting in a can ever since. sure would be nice if youd trade a carter bbd of mid 60's vintage. but if not its cool.
The larger 94 series had 1 1/16" venturies for the Y Block and 1 1/8" aftermarket and those were very popular on VW Bugs in the 70's. Up to around 210 cfm was available. Nothing wrong with the WW's either, that carb has been around almost as long as the 94.
You might ring up Andy, Andy's Restoration in Sidney. He runs a b+m blown flathead, with 3 carbs. He could be some help.............OLDBEET
Hey Rat picture this four 97,s staggered side by side would look the part and do the job and would also do the size of the 4-71 justice just my two bobs worth JR
I think Ill run the dual 48s for now.....then fab up a plate to run WW's. QQ I missed out on the Weiand four carb plate forthe 4-71 on Egay last week...DAMN !! Still prefer to run 2 carbs....286 the WW had been around forever, its a proven acarb and will dupply the cfms. Flatdog, Im very well versed in Holley DP's, but I just doent like the lookm of them on a blown Flathead, but then again, swapping one on for the track could be an option !! Thanx.... Rat
Tom Beatty, in the early '50s, ran 4 Strombergs on a 4-71, arranged in a square back-to-back with the float bowls facing outboard -- this was for lakes, probably on fuel, and unlikely to work well on the street. Looks great, though. I have 2 48's on a 3-71 on my 292" motor. Seem to work OK.
Hey 50, I believe Barney himself also ran the 4x97 carb setup on his lakes car. On that Weiand piece I missed out on, it didnt look like the fuel distribution be good unless tour constantly at WOT?? Anyone used one? Rat
Barney did run 4 Strombergs on a 4-71. I have a picture of it somewhere. As for the Weiand intake, I thought someone started making those. Could have been O'Brien Truckers. Believe he's on the HAMB sometimes.
RB, I'm making the 6 three bolt to 4-71 copy of the Wiend adaptor. $475 as cast, $575 polished. Dennis
