Possibly a stupid question, but is there and up side and a down side for flathead head gaskets? The engine is a 59A with a new set of Navarro heads. The gaskets are "Best" brand, copper with composite core. One side of the gasket has the ID number (upside down at the bottom center of the gasket). Same side has what appears to be a raised ring around the cylinder bore and valve area. Other side has no numbers and is completely flat. I assume the side with the numbers and the raised ring goes on the head side -- the raised ring to seal any imperfections in the head around the cylinder bore.

Am I right or wrong? Does it matter which side goes up? Thanks.

The front and rear have slightly different sized holes, front smaller. Up and down are different between sides to get front and rear right. You need the postwar gasket with round holes in the middle, '46-48, NOT the obsolete gasket with trapezoids, which is still sold for some reason.
