i have a 1950 ford flathead 8 it has a brokin ex guide can i fix it in the car or does it have to go to the machine shop and what could happin if i drive it on short trips
Do you mean a valve guide? That is an easy in frame fix if you have a good valve guide puller and you don't want to drive it anywhere like that or it could tear up your engine pretty good. How did you learn that it was a broken valve guide? You would have had to pull the head and intake anyway right? Need more information to help.
Don't drive it. The valve will be leaking, and can torch the seat, may even crack the block. Pull the head and intake and beg, borrow, or steal a valve bar from an old mechanic. It's not a big job on a running engine, can be a bitch if the engine sat and rusted them in for years.
I would agree with 31ACoupe: You're most of the way there if you've torn it down far enough to determine it's a broken guide. If you haven't torn it down, how do you know it's the guide? All you need now is one of those big bars with the "fork" on the end so you can pull the guide down far enough to pull the horseshoe clip then pop the whole assy out the top.
And see if you can find a nearby flatheader who has the good tools and has done this sort of thing before. I'd be happy to help, but New Jersey is a bit of a stretch I guess.
well i just got the car from my dad and i know not a thing about flatheads so this is my learning prosess and i'm sorry i was miss informed it's a valve seat and i'm pretty sure that has to go to the shop but if not let me know thanx at this point i'm thinkin of a refresh if anyone knows good sites to get flathead parts that would be great
I would like to know how do you know its the Valve Guide?? I know when I had mine the Valve Seat would lift & hold the Valve Open and cause a Miss! just wondering?
