i rebuilt my flathead last year and it ran great, but this year i took it out for the first time and it ran good for about 4 blocks and them i went to take off from a stop sign and it died. So i got it started and rove it home got some more gas in it and took it out and it did the same thing this time i had to tow it back home. It will start up fine and idle good but when you drive it for a bit it does the same thing. I checked the float in the carb it is good new fuel pump but a dont want to drive it till i get it fixed. any help? It is a 8ba in a 1950 ford sedan.

vacuum lock in fuel system? cap vented?

  4. sounds like even though the float is loose, the needle is intermittantly sticking, old gas?wrong gas?(non-oxy fuel is best for a flatty),crap stuck in the fuel inlet filter?

    Idles, but can't accelerate/carry a load..........

First thing I'd check is fuel delivery. Trash in the tank, crud in the line, crack in the flex line, etc. Make sure you're running an inline disposable filter in front of the carb.

Second thing to check would be the accelerator pump in the carb.

A bad condenser in a standard battery ignition can also run "intermittently". A bad ignition controler in an electronic ignition distributor can also cause intermittent problems.

You didn't happen to put on a new gas cap since driving it last year did you?

On my 51 Merc I had to go through three new out of the box "vented" gas caps before I got one that actually vented as it should. I did the walk to the gas station thing at least once over that. Carried a jug of gas after that and that is how I figured it out.

The next time it quits, go back and open the gas cap and see if you can hear the sides of the tank pop back out. Be careful it might puke some gas out if the tank is fairly full.

Some times the inner part of the flexible fue line will collapse and cut off the flow of gas. The hose will look good on the outside but is deteriorated on the inside.

I agree. I go through at least one condensor a year in my Merc. Always acts like a fuel problem when it starts to go bad. The thing always fires up and runs fine til it warms up. Id try a new one, theyre cheap enough even if its not it.

Its afarid of stop signs. Its been traumatized sometime in its life seeing or being in a wreck by crossing the street and its having flashbacks. Whenever it sees a stop sign its having a panic attack and wants to be back home. You might want to consider getting a doctor involved to solve the issue. You might, if I may suggest, rolll the tv out into the garage and watch two lane blacktop or like movie with your car. It might help.
