Hey guys, I picked up this 52 ford f1 yesterday with the intentions of pulling the flathead and using an adapter kit to a 350 transmission I have, and put it in my 32 roadster. Any opinions on this flathead to 350 combination (power, reliability, etc.)? Does anyone know of a good company that sells the adapter kits?

    Thanks,

    Trevor

You are making a mistake in my opinion.

The flathead is a great choice. Gorgeous motor, sounds great, fun power band, etc... But mating it to a TH350 doesn't make a lot of sense to me - especially in a '32 roadster.

Why not just back that flathead with a '39 top loader and do an open drive conversion?

I've never even seen a flathead to 350 adapter... but then I can't say I've ever searched for one.
I assume you were planning this because the roadster is already set up for the automatic?

What about just using the current flathead/tranny combo then?

Nawe man. You are building a hot rod. Do it right and put a clutch in the thing.

  14. Who said driving a hot rod should be easy? What are you planning on drinking a Latte while driving? Shift that sucker!

  15. The only reason to justify a automatic transmission behind a Flathead IMHO would be some physical problem making it impossible to use a clutch. HRP

  18. nothing wrong with a C4, plenty of kits out there to adapt it and a great tranny behind a flattie

Well, to respond to your "real men" comment, I would have to say that a real man would not build a fake fiberglass car. Just say'n

I believe a C4 to rob much less power than a TH 350. If you insist on going auto ,why not go AOD to get the extra legs on the highway.

Go with 3 pedals. I had a 350 in my roadster for a while. Switched to a 5-speed years ago. It was the best move I ever did. It's way more fun to drive and I feel I have more control over the car. Believe me you won't regret it.

Many feel intimidated by the whole auto. to manual changeover if they have never done it, but until you've done it once (and recovered from the increase in $$$ spent) you won't understand the sense of accomplishment you will feel from it, makes the next one so much easier too.
Echoing what others have said; it gives you a whole different driving experience.

How do you think the car will perform with the stock flathead and stock manual transmission (from my 52 f1 pickup)
with a 8" rear end with 3:23 or 3:50 gears

Ah hell, run a C-4 with a fake clutch pedal, a shifter that sets the handle up in the right position and half of the people who look inside will never know the difference. Build it the way you think will make you decide to jump in it and go rather than deciding to take one of it's garage mates. I see way too many rods and customs that never get any serious miles put on them because they are not comfortable to drive often or any real distance. The owners always seem to have some half baked reason for not driving them more than 20 or 30 miles one way from the house.
I am putting pretty much the same engine in my Model A with a T-5 simply because it is going to see serious road miles when it is done. I don't mind rowing my own gears though.

as I said in a previous thread on that "real steel" body.... you should see if you can actually do anything to fix it FIRST.

It looked kind of sketchy in your other thread, but I got to see the other pics when you tried to sell it on the classifieds...

That body would be a real challenge for most builders here. It looks awful.

I hate to sound so dam negative, but it is super crude in details.

I posted here because you said that you were building for resale later...it won't sell for what a brookville would.... not even close.

I agree with the comments that it would be a much better car with 3 pedals, but let's get realistic for a minute...

The "real steel" body you have looks to be a repro that needs a lot of work, you have no chassis or any other parts yet, and you don't seem to have anything resembling a plan. I mean no offense here at all, but you need to take ten steps back and look at that body first.

Use this bench building time to figure out what that body needs, how you can get it done, and what it's going to cost to get it done right. Not fast or cheap, but right.
