Flathead intakes - differences

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 4t64rd, Apr 30, 2004.

  1. I tried a search, but I couldn't find an answer.

I know there is differences between the intakes, early (48 and before) and late (49-53). When I go to a swap meet, what physical differences will I be looking for when searching for an intake? What problems should I avoid. I'm looking for a 2x2 for my 8ba.

The visual differences are going to be mainly the oil tube that is on the later intakes. It is not there on the early ones. On the early ones....the oil goes into the same place that the fuel pump mounts to. So for your 8BA stay away from the intakes that you can see don't have the separate oil tube or ones that Voodoo, Dv8 or myself are trying to buy. [IMG]

Stock and most aftermarket 8BA manifolds have two holes (circa 1-1 1/2" diameter) at the left front, maybe 4 or 5 inches back from fore edge of manifold, slanted out at about 45 degrees. A few aftermarket ones move one hole to top of manifold in same area. Look for cast bosses meant to take the holes--you will sometimes see an early manifold with a hole added there by an owner adapting it to a late engine.

PS--if the rig is complete, one hole will contain an oil filler/breather pipe going up, the other will contain a slightly smaller curved tube tha leads downward to connect a breather pipe beneath engine.

  5. If you can't get to swap by 6:00 don't bother as they will all be gone. hahahahaha
