Hot Rods Flathead machine shops in Michigan? Ohio?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by DesmoDog, Feb 19, 2020.

  1. I've done a search or three on this, but haven't been successful in finding a recommendation for a machine shop in or around SE Michigan that is familiar with flatheads. The few shops I have found that have websites that list them charge wildly different rates, one place was twice as expensive as what H&H lists for their services for instance.

What I'm trying to do is find a place I can take my block to and have it cleaned (acid dipped?) and checked for cracks to start with. If it's no good I'll likely go with the banger that came in my Model A chassis. If it's usable I have a choice to make but right now I'm just guessing at things and getting nowhere.

I'm not too excited about taking it somewhere that hasn't worked on them before, but I'm also not too excited about shipping a heavy block to H&H or whoever just to find out it's trash.

There's GOT to be a place relatively local who has worked on these before, it's freaking DETROIT around her for cripe sakes.

    Thanks...

  2. Reach out to Bill at Brothers in Troy...he might have some recommendations

25 years ago my dad had a local machine shop do his flathead and they managed to have a couple loose valves,I think when they took it apart they threw everything in a pile like you can do with a sbc and had a couple valves that had too much ground off but if they would have called we had another set of valves and my dad was too cheap to go with adjustable lifters so just do not take it to anyone.

D&S engines in Royal Oak do a lot of flathead work for Bill mentioned above. I’ve done 2 Chevy engines with them and think they are really good.
