I’ve spent all night searching and can’t find the answer. I need the dimensions of the rectangular footprint of an 8ba oil pan. I’m picking up the Flathead shown below next week and want to make a cheap and easy dolly out of some 2x8 or 2x10 if needed. My plan is to drop the oil pan into a precisely built rectangular wooden box. I’ll probably need to notch a bit out for the crank in the front and maybe in the back, but those don’t need to be precise. Just looking for the length, width, and height needed to get the block resting on the pan rails with the bottom of the pan just off the floor. Any help would be greatly appreciated. My first Flathead!

I got a little case of the flu bug and my wife isn't allowing me in the garage today. She is an Eagles fan and once the game starts she wont pay much attention to me. Ill sneak out and get what you need. I have a couple of pans off the car and a dolly I built just like what you are planning on. Ill get you dimensions and a pic of the engine dolly.

Here is what I built for my 8BA. I made it strong enough to hold the completed motor and transmission. I often over engineer things so it probably doesn't have to be this sturdy but better then the alternative.

That is a 8BA pan for reference

The back has to be built a little wider to accommodate the oil pump area.

I made my length just under 20" which means I probably used a felt pen to mark my wood cuts. Close enough

Width at the back, I suggest a little more wiggle room than I have here. I'm going to adjust this so I stop rubbing the paint off my oil pan when the motor is out.

    Narrower at the front.

Inside pan dimension at the front

And the back where the oil pump goes.

I made my height about 6 1/2 inches, plenty for a stock pan. I modded my pan for a high volume oil pump so in retrospect I should have gone 8" maybe. I ended up taking a wood chisel and adding the clearance needed.

I used heavy steel casters on the bottom and it rolls pretty well as long as you don't care about your polished tile garage floor.

All loaded up guys. Thanks for the help. I ended up building two quick cradles there on the spot with some pre-cut wood. I used 24” long 2x10s and 18” long 2x6s. I laid the 2x10s upright at a slight “V”, lowered the engines down on them where I wanted, and screwed on the 2x6 front and rear supports. Had to notch for the dipstick but that wasn’t too bad with a sawzall. Worked great. It was one of those “need to take everything” deals so I have another complete short block, a ******, radiator, and a bunch of other miscellaneous stuff that will be showing up on the cl***ifieds soon. Thanks again for all the help.

It’s actually a Chevy HHR and it’s surprisingly spacious. It’s just right for two side by side snug as a bug in a rug.

Ha! My bud has a Chevy HHR, brought home two 302 Fords last week, side-by-side. I asked why two engines in there at once, he said "Two were only $40 more than one, and it was a long drive..." Doh!

Yeah, didn’t really need two but the seller insisted. Just wish I had more room in my one car garage.
