My theory is this: the people who make underwear now are a different shape than the people who wear it. Might have something to do with geographic location.

  3. LOL My granddaughter went to Korea on a school trip. She was using one of my T shirts for a night shirt. She brought it to the market to buy me a T shirt from Korea and wanted to get me the right size. I am one big man in Korea triple XL. :D

So on that same thought if it's just a hair bigger what's to say some one didn't make it bigger at some time?

Could be a weld around the sumo where it was added to or maybe hammer marks?

It seems like to big of a difference to be variation in production lines but honestly it if would have cleared the stock stuff most people would notice it being a half inch different one was or another.

That being said way back there you said the 46-8 cars with straight axles wouldn't have any reason to have steering interference. I'm laying under one right now, that drag link cuts right under the motor and near the sump so maybe that's not ruled out yet

Nevrdun51, I have 3 8BA pans and they all look exactly like yours other than the extra welding I added for the high volume pump and a crank case breather. You know these pans are made out of heavy steel and take to modifications easily. Might be easier to play with the pan than to mess with the steering geometry. Just an idea.

I've collected many flathead parts for over the last 25 years and sometimes I'm not sure what I have on hand.
There are actually 3 oil pans listed for '49-'51 V8 car engines, according to my ch***is parts catalog, which I've looked at MANY times.
The '49-'50 engines had one I've never seen; "with cleanout plate",.... and one where the drain plug screws in horizontally. The '51 pan drain plug "sets at an angle".
My '51 has the correct pan with the angled drain plug, (along with a spare), but I have an engine on a stand, (intended to be installed in my '51) with a smooth-sided pan that has the horizontal drain plug, and clearly shows the sump extends toward the rear when compared with my spare '51 pan. I've never really looked closely at these pans, until now, so we all have learned something from this post. ??
The smooth sided '51 pan with the angled drain plug has the sump more centered, while the smooth sided '49-'50 pan with the horizontal drain plug has the sump moved towards the rear. End of mystery? :)
    nevrDUN51, the pan on your '51 is a '49-'50.

Bob, ironically, after talking to my builder and a ton of guys last night, I came to the exact same conclusion. The best part is that this is all because of my linkage. The 49-50 pan that's on it would still fit with the stock linkage.

Ok the brighter side of news, I fired it up last night and broke in the cam. She sounds AMAZING! Should have this all worked out by the weekend.

I'm doing the steering linkage this weekend and trying to get the car on the road. Should have a video of it running soon. Thanks for the help and comments guys. This car has really been trying my patience.

    Not Sure

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Tom and i have a 50 ford sedan 2 door that is fairly original. I don't mean to revive an old thread but im having the same issue. I have a smooth pan but it seems as though if the sump wad a little more narrow i could have the tire rod on the correct side of the drag link. As my name implies usually I'm not sure.
