i have an 8ba flathead im going to run in my coupester, im using an earlier aluminum intake manifold without a down draft tube coming out of it for ventilation, so since im not using the machanical fuel pump can i just make a vent tube to come out in place of the fuel pump.????

my next question is, I have minimal space in the engine compartment so i was planning on not using the big old oil filter that bolts to the head, can i just plug the oil holes except the one for the oil pressure sensor, so i can still use a oil pressure gauge.?? everything else im still using ..thanks for the help ahead of time.

I'm not an expert, but have just been reading a thread here on the hamb about the fuel pump bush.

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=856695

The wisdom is that on an 8ba, (earlier are different), you must have the fuel pump bush in place, and you should also plug the bore of the bush.

Leaving the bush out will give NO oil pressure.
Leaving the bush out but fitting a solid plug in it's place will give oil pressure at the rear of the engine only, but NONE at the front.
Having the bush in place but nothing in the bore will give oil pressure but reduced by the constant bleedoff of the push rod feed hole.
Bush in place and the bore filled with something to imitate the push rod will ensure full oil pressure as intended by ford.

With regards the filter, it can be removed, and the feed and drain holes in the motor plugged. You should weigh this up against the amount of driving you do, and offset the filter removal by scheduling oil changes at more frequent intervals. (Say 1000 miles as an example). Lots of flatheads run without a filter.

Oil filter was a option anyway. Us good oil and change it every 25 hours. What's wrong with the stock fuel pump?

Install a home-made PCV system. There's a few threads on HAMB about them.

I am with Mike on this. Good opportunity to go with PCV.

Other option is drill a hole in the front area for a breather. I bought an intake that had this done. Take a oil fill/breather off an 8BA and drill the size that works. Put it in the same spot that the 8BA has them.

By venting the back of the intake, you won't be venting the front area of the valley as well. The 59ab has a vent in the front corner of the oil pan that works with the vent in the rear of the intake. The 8BA doesn't have that.

Search for a PCV thread, not much involved to do it. I'm running stock fuel pump (+elec for priming and back-up) for a Holley 390 4 bbl. Works fine. Also check flatheadsareus forum for ways to do a 95% oil filter. Mine is relocated under the frame.
