Well I went to an auction last weekend at an old-timers estate hoping to get some flathead stuff for my next project. The old guy was a known flathead nut but nothing was listed in the auction notice so I figured most of it was gone. I was dead wrong. My score for the weekend? 4 8BA blocks some of which have been to the machine shop already, 28BA motors minus heads and intakes, 1 complete 59AB and an 8CM complete with the overdrive******* still hooked up. All this plus a box of Holly 94's for... $110. There were a bunch of stock heads, intakes, exhaust manifolds that were sold dirt cheap too but I just don't have the room. I almost feel guilty for getting it so cheap, but I never get good deals like this. I'll post pics of the trailer full once I get around to it. And as of right now I'm not looking to get rid of anything, but when I do it'll be offered here first. I need to check everything to see what is usuable. Now I gotta decide if I'm gonna put one in the 46 or if I'm going to look for something else. Sorry but I had to share this with people who like flatties...nothing but musclecar mullet-heads around here. Bill
Holy*****! You*****d 'em. Congrats man. That's pretty slick that you knew the guy had the stuff even when it wasn't posted on the advertisement.
It's one of those things.... i'm wanting to see the pic's real bad...but I know it's gonna hurt when I do.... hehe... congrats! you lucky********!
Next you'll be******ing that the box full of 94's was a rip off, all the ones underneath were those damned old 97's! Sheesh, you're as bad as Southfork!
Sounds pretty good for here in central IL. You're lucky if you can even find junk around here, buying it cheap is just a bonus.
I know that shooting from a moving vehicle is wrong, but does this count??? Boy this thread has turned in a wierd direction!
Spose the bike rider is still stuck to the grill of that Semi in the distance? What's the last thing that goes thru a bug's mind when he hits the grill? His****! LOL, thought you were being cute, but your mood seems to have changed with that last pic. He got a great deal on the flatty stuff, but I'd still like to kill him. Is that envy?
Guy on the bike was DWI and fled the scene....looks like the was goin to fast to oh BTW congrats on the GREAT score!!
Thanks guys....I am sure I will be asking a lot of questions when the build begins since this is the first flathead for me. There was only one 97 out of about 200 carbs there and it sold for $60 and needed a lot of work. You could get your choice of Holly 4 barrels for $5-6. Dad was putting the stuff in the shed today and found a couple extra cranks on one of the pallets. Not sure if they are Merc or Ford, anyone know the easy way to tell? Plowboy I didn't realize we were that close until I looked at a map. Good to know there is another Hamber stuck here in the cornfields. Anyway thanks for hearing me out....I feel like a 16 year old after getting my license.. .or something else! Bill
only way i know to tell on the cranks is the clean out trap plugs are different sizes... merc ic 5/8"... and the ford is 3/8 ".... anyone know how to tell the stroke... a 4 incher or better is a merc......
Nice score. I'm MURDEROUS jealous! Don't forget, Canuck Merc cranks (also) have the small sludge trap plug, but a little lozenge or "peanut"indentation in the face of the first crank cheek. Easiest way i know to check'em is throw'em in a block (You've got LOTS) and measure (compare) the side clearance. Additional 1/16th (side to side) on the merc crank.
Or put in block (a piece of oiled cardboard will make a good temp main bearing if block is bare) and rest a ruler on throw at top and bottom of stroke. Difference is big enough to be easy to spot. Don't run the cardboard bearing past 4,000 RPM though...
Willy my in-laws live in Bloomington. I get over there all the time. Maybe I'll have to stop by and see what you are up to. Do you know a guy named Ron Wiggins over there? He is a buddy of mine and has been working on one of the most awesome "street rod" Model A RPU's I have ever seen. Done all by himself in his garage over the last 10-15 years or so.
