Hi everyone, need some help here with a '49-'53 V8. Customer dropped off a 1947 Ford pick up with a merc V8, converted to 12v and tuned up with electric fuel pump. Just rebilt the carb and new fuel filter. Problem is it starts, idles and accelerates fine, then after a few miles it chokes out like lack of fuel. I'm thinking maybe a vapor lock problem. Was just looking for any other options that might be specific to flatheads. I'm still real green to these motors. Thanks for any help. Reply or email to ptealfloyd@msn.com or even text to 630-841-4070... Thanks...
Most likely, especially if it is hot out there, like here. If it was mine, I have been wanting to try the diesel fuel test. I am not sure what ratio, though. Maybe try a gallon in a almost full tank?
Check the gas cap to make sure that it is a vented gas cap. I had the same problem on my 51 Merc and went through 3 new gas caps before getting one that would actually vent. Usually when you drive it down the road and it quits and you open the gas cap because you think it's out of gas you can hear the sides of the tank pop back out. You think that there was pressure in the tank but instead the vacuum had ****ed the sides of the tank in when the fuel pump puts a vacuum on the tank. It also quits quicker if the tank is full rather than somewhat low. If the electric pump is mounted near the tank it shouldn't vapor lock.
Yeah its got a full tank and a home made vent which could be clogged. I'll try blowing it out and looking at the gas cap. Thanks guys for the quick reply and the re***urance of the problem.
