i have a 239 ford flathead and i am curious what a good transmission would be to hook up to it. i have a toploader right now, but i also think a four speed with overdrive would be nice mainly because i could cruise down the highway in fifth and not over rev the engine. any flatheadders here know of a good transmission that would give me the power from stoplight to stoplight yet would also give me the option to cruise at a buck down the highway?
We are in the middle of putting a T-5 behind our flathead in place of the old 3-speed. It has a nice 3.63 low gear, fourth is direct (1:1) and fifth gear is a .73 overdrive which will be nice on the freeway. This car is a driver and needs a little longer legs anyway. I looked into 3+overdrives (stock Ford stuff) and all I could come up with was junk. The T-5 appears to be the best deal for the money.
my buddy was telling me about an s-10 5 speed because its got the closest position to a 39 ford 3 speed, ive been trying to find one myself.
you know something you are not the first person to have said that. at one of the cruises i went to in NH, i spoke to a guy who also told me that a late eighties early nineties two wheel drive s-10 five speed ****** was a good setup. i found that hard to believe up until now that more than one person has told me that.
The S10 is THE most popular swap onto the flathead - several companies offer kits to bolt it right up. Been popular for over 10 years - at least.
I'm using a mustang T5 for it's superior torque and gear ratios with the tailshaft from an s-10 which relocates the mustangs/shifter about 10-12 inchs forward. Mustang t5 left and s-10 on the right... . . . .
