Flathead won't suck fuel?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Flat Rod, Jun 26, 2004.

  1. I'm going to look at a 50 Ford 4dr this week and the owner says he cannot get the engine to take on fuel. He has replaced the fuel pump and cleaned the tank but the engine only runs if you put gas straight into the carb. Anyone dealt with this problem before?

    Rusty gas line?

loosen the connection to the carb, and get a empty can of some kind. turn the engine over using the starter, do you get fuel.

Yes: you have a carb problem, lift of the lid and check for gas

    No: Check the fuelpump.

Think these guys have all hit the nail on the head. Mine acted that way when I first got it and the pump rod had been ground down. It had a new pump but the rod wasn't long enough to let it get a full stroke. I think the original length of the rod was 8 7/8 inches for the cast iron intakes and 7 7/8 for the aluminum intakes.

You can use an electric pump to bypass the mechanical to see where you're at with the rest of the car...as mentioned, could be cam, pump rod, or pump...pump rod is more common than you may think.

1st things 1st. Make sure that there is fuel in the tank. My tank sits with about a gallon and it won't make it up to the fuel pump let alone the carb. I already went through this. You might want to have the carb rebuilt for the floats might have a hole or two in them or the main jets have some kinda***** plugg'in them up. 2nd choice. I would replace the car!!! Just kidd'in. Check out those things that I had mentioned. KNUX

If it is the cam and or the rod, you can weld up the end of the rod and make it longer. worked for me

  9. they're rite- place a washer on the top of fuel pump rod-bolt pump back on.....I spent a whole weekend at a car show debuggin a friends '47 ford with the same deal. weld it up and grind smooth once you get it home......

  10. Yeah, The washer on the fuel pump rod has worked for me in the past. It is an old trick. The lobe that the pump rod rides on will wear down just enough to not make the pump work.
