Looking at a couple options on a flathead build for the 32 pickup project.

Simple 2x2 or 3x2 intake aluminum head build?

Over the top 4x2 intake twin plug head build?

    4-71 blower motor.

I have always liked a cool looking and sounding motor. What are thoughts on the Max over bore you would feel comfortable running. Not building a cross country traveler so keep in mind it will be a local hopper.

None selected as of yet. I have an early (49-50) Merc but needs to be checked out. Has narrow pulleys.

Depending on what block you choose will effect your bore and stroke options.

Hey Scott, if you supercharge it, 2 words...Joe Abbin. Buy the book from Roadrunner Engineering and call Mike at H&H flatheads for your parts or have him build it. My 49 8BA is bored .125, 471 Navarro blower, intake and heads. Henry put lots of metal in there to play with. Relieved, ported, merc crank, CNC steel mains...I don't know anything about anything on flatheads, I just stand on the shoulders of giants and do what they have proven works. $aves money in the long run. Just sayin.

    Great surname, Scott...
The '49-'50 Merc will safely bore .125" (1/8") over standard, but do read up on practical builds. Mild is the best bet, but do some research.

I guess I am not good enough to purchase a twin plug setup so we shall go with a blower build or keep it simple with a twin carb setup. I see why guys stick SBC's in everything! Lol

If you want a good reliable engine without costing a fortune, this is my take on the subject. Use the Merc engine that you have, it will have the 4 inch crank. Bore it .040 and use stock type 4 ring pistons and rings. Clean up the crank and use new bearings. I used an Isky max1 cam and Isky valve springs. Either stock valves or 1.6 in. dia. Chev valves with adjustable lifters. Fined aluminium heads( I prefer Edelbrock because the combustion chambers are cnc machined) A 390 Holly 4 barrel or a 2 or 3 pot 2 barrel set up. Most importantly get rid of the stock distributor. There are several options for a distributor, I converted a Chryco electronic unit, or talk to Buba on the Ford Barn page. He converts chev dissys for use in flatheads. This is only my idea of a flatty. It basicly the same specs as my engine that I have put 75000 miles on. There are probably thousands of combinations that will work great. Check out the Ford Barn page. There are many flatty gerues there that are far more knowledgable than am..

Two fours sounds like an awful lot of carburetor for a Flattie.
