Is it possible that the lack of a ballast resistor may be causing it?

Agree with MBL: check for bad or missing resistor. In '40s, they're on the firewall under the dash on the driver's side, but don't know about '48s.

Is this a recent one-piece cap Mallory?? Their current points and condensers are Chinese. I know from personal observation that the points have VERY short lifespan, and I have heard of TWO different condenser problems: They are coated with lacquer, or something, and don't ground properly. Beyond that, realdamnshort lifespan.
NAPA has Mallory points and condenser made out of actual metal. Several people on Ford barn have reccomended these as the cure In the meantime, try getting a condenser from Standard or Echlin for, say, a '65 Ford and see if that clears things up.
