Gonna try and remove the back glass in my 50 Fleetline tonight. Just wondering if any of you glass guys can tell me if I have to mortgage my house if it cracks?
I installed mine with duct tape and spark plug wire, so removal would be easy! It IS a thick piece of glass, though...probably not the cheapest in the world...but it's a fairly popular car, so it might not break YOU if you break IT!!! (And of course...one of Rocky's relatives has an old Fleetline sitting dead...and the dude who did that wicked chopped flat black fastback on the Mooneyes show post should have a spare window for you, too!!) Good luck, fellow Fleetliner!
I did find a part number on the web but no pricing. DB118 I just hope it doesn't crack. The windshield just crumbled, that's why I am leary of it.
Root, Let me kow if you have problems with 'keeping it in one piece'. I have a guy up here that deals in old Chevy's like that (he's my supplier) and he could probably get his hands on a back glass if you need it. r
Cut the rubber seal, it will pop rite out. It is tempered don"t hit the edge, protect it. Store standing as in the car ,not flat.............OLDBEET
We'll see....... I planned on cutting the seal on the inside of the car, where it's not so brittle. Wish me luck....
Try Steve at Standard Glass (541) 267-5452 he had brand new rear glass ($300) for my 40 Chevy in-stock, so I imagine it is available for yours as well. A real nice guy, helpful and quick turn on cutting new windsheild glass too ($150 for BOTH sides).
I will give him a call Cleatus. I also need to get the Olds one piece,DW188, for my Fleetline. It is pretty pricey though.
But...like they say, just take a razor to the seal and cut the old one out. I got my old one out without damaging it, no problem, and it has even been kicking around in my garage for about 4 years now without breaking - they are tougher than you would think. I just decided to replace it cause it was yellowed with some bubbles around the edges.
Just pull the inside moulding off and cut the rubber off around the pinch weld. It'll come right out!Just don't push it hard enough to clear the trunk onto the floor!
Root.......that glass is a hunka tempered glass and believe me, it won't "crack". It'll shatter and fall apart in little chunks but like everybody else says, it's a tough piece. Just cut the rubber gasket and it'll fall outa the hole. If it's like the 48 and earlier, you can remove the inside glass moulding and the glass will fall into the package tray. But I dunno if 49 and later is made that way or not... And FatHack.......don't go trying to sell the back winnder out of good ol' Uncle Bob's fleetline quite yet. I may want to talk him outa the whole car later but right now the storage is free!
