is it TRUE you can flip 54 chev CAR spindles to lower it some? my ol man seems to think you can but its been years.
I was just under the 54 doing brakes today, I don't think it is that easy. Even if you could get them upside down, the camber would be way off.
Way back in 1963 one of my buddies did this on his '54 Bel-Air convert, I used to go cruising with him, I don't recall if it seriously screwed up the handling, (and I never actually drove it before or after, to know the difference) but I do recall that it resulted in strange 'clicking' or 'snapping' sounds at times, this said, I wouldn't take that approach today, just get some 'real' dropped spindles.
If you can I'd worry about the kingpin angle/SAI you'd end up with. the spindle is designed w/ a small amount of angle into it, so flipping them would put some seriously positive camber on the tires. You may not have enough adjustment to try and correct the 4-8 degrees of SAI. Drop spindles like mentioned above might be a better option. jon
what I have been told is for your 49-52 chevys, you use 53-54 spindles (uprights) and you get a 1" drop. seems like alot of work for 1".
Lowered uprights are pretty easy to get a hold of. They can be pricey if you're very monetarily restricted I think about 2-3 bills. Also, the steering arms that bolt up there are better replaced (they are longer than stock and correct the angles). happy hoppy- 1 inch is 1 inch. Lower is better!
If you are doing the pins anyways...might as well put in the nice cleaned up 53-54 spindles and get that 1".
