In the 50's my friend did this on his 56 Ford Pickup and the axle beat a hole in the engines pan. He modded the pan and raised the engine a little.

 

Nobody just does a simple big n little rubber rake any more? I don't mean to tell the whole crowd you got a corn kernel on your lip. Simple n cheap parts chaser/shop truck. The less mods the better? You spoke value. 50 guys want it closer to stock and easy to service, there's maybe 4 of us who think dropped axles and scraping speed bumps is fun.

Or I can just shut the fk up and keep watching, I love these trucks.

 

I put it back how it was... and it does have tire rake..probley gonna stay that way... I bought a new coyote powered f150... but don't wanna haul nothing in the bed so the shop truck needs back on the road soon..

so here's where I'm at.... I have 4 f series trucks... all have F'd up suspension..my 56 f-100 has a drop axel... IMHO ..hokey... my 51 F-1 has lowering springs...hokey,.. my 59 lowered springs... hokey.. and my 64 is stock... works kinda good.....I'd like to find a good way to go that modernizes the suspension... back in the day these trucks all got (most all) Camero front clips... and thy worked good... hokey? yep... but worked... now what is there??? not a fan of the crown vic...and no more fat man??? whats the absolute best way to go now days???

 

on my 56... drop axel with sway bars frt and rear.....here's what I notice... but trying not to... boarder line wants to bump steer...camber is neg about 3/8'' probley started at zero but slowly bent because of the huge drop in the axel...all chassis ride good on smooth new paved roads... but thats not real life..... so.. to make theses trucks ride like the new trucks... whats the best fix???

 

I have some news for you, it's NEVER going to ride and drive like a new truck (if that's your goal), it's always going to drive exactly like what it is, a 65 year old pickup truck without changing the front suspension. If that's what you're wanting, chuck the entire existing stock axle and get a Heidt's, Art Morrison crossmember, whatever, with control arms, T'bird style rack with MII spindles and do that. If you're paying someone else to drop your stock suspension, by putting axle on top of the spring, dropped axle, de-arched springs, whatever, it's going to end up costing you the same amount of money as going to a more modern, independent front suspension and it will still be a 65 pickup truck. My '48 Diamond T one ton I built using a late 90's Chevy 3/4 ton front crossmember and suspension, and guess what? It rides and drives like a 1948 one ton truck, although the steering is early 90's Chevy pickup zero road feel easy.

C notched frame after got stance.

 

Moved steering box onto top of frame shortened column. There was a thread on here years ago someone did this. Have to do some digging. 1960s ford bonneville truck.

 

Can answer the “other options” better on the OT forum.
Might need this moved.

however, I picked up a dropped axle for my 49. I hope it drives and steers like it did in 49.

 

Found it was wrong look up this. It worked.
