I'll let you in on a little secret. Just because it's traditional and done back in the day blah blah blah does not mean that some of us find it DUMB. There's lots of traditional tricks that not everyone loves. Like S-10 frame swaps.

Not at all! I didn't say, nor do I think YOU are dumb! I like that you want to step up and do it. If you were in my area I'd help you do it. I'd har*** you, but I'd still help. Even though...it's dumb!

My whole point here is that he asked for help on how to make them- not what does everyone think about them.

Opinions are like a$$holes- everyone has one and they ALL stink :p:D

For several years there use to be a red pickup at BTT50's that had floaters on the front and rear wheels and then the cap on the spare mounted to the side of the bed was made to turn. It would get your attention.

man. some of you guys have way too much time. just breezed through FOUR pages of persoral opinions and guff. there were only a few tech pointers posted up, and all trailer park ******* wanted to know was how to do it. cuz he likes the idea and wants to run em. guy by me has em on an old sled called THE SLIDER. asked him how he did it, and he wouldn't say. but yeah, cut the clips off the hub caps. weld a nut on the end of the spindle, drill a tight hole in your dust cap.thread some threaded rod into the spindle nut, put a nut on the inside hub cap side of the threaded rod. put the hub cap on, take your hub cap center and put a nut on the inside of it. so essencially the center cap of your hub cap becomes a wing nut, and sandwiches the hubcap to the nut you put near the end of the the threaded rod. thats front. never could figure out the rear axle though. cuz the ones i saw weren't on bearing with weights on the hub caps. maybe a backet welded on the rear axle housing , that goes straight up and curves over the top of the tire and just holds the hub cap in place? and since the top of the tire is always hidden in the top of the wheel well, you'd never see it

Posie's Extemeliner has floating wheelcovers with a very cool Deco look. IMHO the trick needs a treatment liike this to keep it from having the creepy (i.e. lame) skidding tire effect.

every hubcap is different when mounting these but basicly you start by removing the mounting clips off the back of the hubcaps then tack weld a plate in the center of the cap with a bolt about 1" to 1" 1/2 and drill the spindle to the same thread as the bolt you may need to space out the cap from the wheel using washers between the cap and spindle because you want the hubcap to ride as close to the wheel as posible to give the effect they are mounted to the wheel basicly the hubcap spins on with the bolt onto the spindle... remove any wheel weights from the front of the rim and make sure your valve stems are also clearing the hubcap also make sure your wheels arent bent as you want them to spin as true as possible! hope this helps! :D

If it were me, I would find some old water pumps, and pull the bearing/shaft/pulley attachment (with the threaded holes in it) and install it into the hub cap, then bolt the flipper to the holes on the outer portion...
I think that would spin quite nicely..
I have a few of them around that I just keep for who knows what ??
    JMHO......
    Cheers.....

i can't beleive how everyone has to put in there own opinion here!! First place is there not"spinners" they stay still, its a old traditional trick done in the 50's.second thing is he asked "how to do it" he didn't ask for everyones personal thought on them! Its his ****in car let him do what he wants. Not once did he ask" what do you think".
Everyone is ready to be another country heard from!! Stick to the topic!
I'm pretty sure most people want to know how to do & don't give a rats *** about what someone thinks.
If ya ask me this post is pretty beneficial to HAMB'rs, good trick to know.Should be reposted during Tech week.

Pretty sure they originaly were an advertising gimic. Somewhere i have an old pic of a new '34 Ford with the dealership name and logo on a flat disc mounted to the front spindle.

Freaks people out to be sure.

Okay, all you grouchy tech guys, I used to search function and came up with all of these within 2 minutes, all of them contain "how to" at some point in the thread and should provide the original poster with what he was looking for. In the meantime, you will have to excuse the rest of us for expressing opinions on a discussion board.I wish I actually did like them 'cause I can see the "trick" appeal, but I don't,they mess with my head.so shoot me.

i have FLOATERS on my 56 delivery the only way they look right is if you run skirts so you can't see your back tire. people trip out on my car when they see me cruising, but it's even better if your driving in the rain because they think your car is sliding on the road
