Hey guys, I am sure you have all heard this before, but I am having flooding issues with my 318. I was reading a thread earlier today from a fellow having fuel problems with his Edelbrock carb, and suggestions came up about fuel pressure problems. I have not run into this with any of my other projects, but this car is new to me. It is equipped with a Carter 2bbl carb, and unknown electric fuel pump, and a Mr. Gasket fuel pressure regulator. I did not read good reviews about the regulator and the fuel pump cycles loudly and non-stop. I was wondering if I could just replace the pump with a lower pressure pump and eliminate the regulator. I have a carb kit on hand- haven't installed it yet...
Replace the needle and seat and set the float level. Try that first, it might fix the problem without buying and changing a lot of parts.
Roger that. It is just that I have never had a car that had or needed a fuel regulator, and the reviews that it got were horrible! Just looked at the fuel pump, and it's a Mr Gasket model 12s which also gets terrible reviews. Just trying to make the car as reliable as possible, so will replace the pump with an Airtex E8016S. I have already replaced the coil, plug wires, points, condenser, plugs, rotor and cap. (mostly upgrades)
No, its got a motor mount on the front of the engine (like an old sbc mount). I've never seen one on a small block mopar. Bolts through the water pump- meaning I would have to support the engine, and pull off the motor mount to change the pump. Either way it interferes with the fuel pump location.
So changing the needle and seat and setting the float level is too much work, easier to change the fuel pump. Which there may be nothing wrong with.
Is the fuel pump mounted solid or does it have a rubber mount, mounted solid will make a lot of noise. Are you able to regulate the fuel pressure, you need very little for a 2 barrel carburetor, HRP
Never said that rebuilding the carb was too much work! Just got a rebuild kit from Rock Auto this week. I want to do the entire fuel delivery system while I have the carb off. I was reading another thread where they had pretty bad opinions about the Mr Gasket regulator, so I looked it up, along with the 12s and they got really bad reviews. Figured I'd replace them with better gear and replace the old fuel line. Just wondering if the regulator was necessary if the fuel pump ran the proper psi range.
Rebuilt the carb and reinstalled today. My next step before trying to start it will be replacing the spark plugs. Anybody know what the correct plug gap is? Right now it has "Splitfires" in it and I have been told that they were junk! Gonna buy "Champions" or "Autolites".
Rusty - the link below may give you some things to consider about the electric pump: http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Electric_fuel_pumps_and_old_cars.htm Jon.
I read what the carburetor shop said about electric fuel pumps, and believe me I would much rather run a mechanical pump, (I actually installed a 318 pump on my 55 Desoto with an adapter!) but with the front motor mount, it will not fit.
