Event Coverage Flooding....Midwest HAMBers check in please

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Rocky, Mar 18, 2019.

  1. Hope all the Midwest HAMBers are ok. I know Joe Cool lives in a little river town of Pacific Junction and at 4:00 this morning that entire town was under mandatory evacuation orders. Joe is right in the middle of a 57 chevy 4 door to a 2 door conversion. They got many feet of water in the entire area so I'd almost bet Joe's 57 got plenty of water in it.
I live on a hill side about 2 miles from the Missouri river so we're ok. This flood is the worse flood in this area since the 30s. It's no joke. 3 people confirmed drowned and last time I heard 5 more were missing in the waters...many people and animals rescued with air boats and helicopters and the main river, the Missouri is said to crest in a day or so...all roads and hiways into Omaha are cut off or washed away except I-80. Rain forcast for tomorrow. Some surrounding towns are completely cut off..no way in or out except by air or boat.
Will the Midwest HAMBers affected by this massive flood please respond to this thread please so we know you're ok?

i just went thru there yesterday commin home from the chickasha swap meet. 77 detoured at beatrice, and things really got goofy trying to get across the Missouri to head north on 29. saw lots of cars and homes flooded. the river looked like a violent storm on the ocean it was churning up so much. hope all are safe

  3. This shot I took this moning standing on a dike on the Nebraska side of the Missouri river. The water on the lower right is creeping up on that dike. If it breaches the dike we're in deep shit and the water may come up a little more before it starts coming back down tomorrow. Flood19Missouri.jpg

My family in Nebraska and Iowa are dealing with it but so far safe. My sister and her family in Fremont said this afternoon there is finally a way out of the city for “critical use” I’m terrified to think of what the normal spring flooding is going to look like on the heels of this gnarly shit. The dams, levees, and dikes all blown to bits.

Glad your safe rock. You’d been on my mind.

Things are much better here in Norfolk, personally I am on higher ground so the flood waters never got up to our level even though it was within half mile of us, 2 of the dead were from Norfolk.

I live about 12 miles nw of Lincoln on an acreage, last Wednesday and Thursday we had about 8 acres of our 11.5 of farm land under water and the road I live on was closed at our drive way due to water pouring over the road a half mile south of us. It covered about an eighth mile of the road . We had water about 50 ft from the back door in our yard. Thankfully the water went down by Friday afternoon . This is the worst i've seen since 1993 here. Nothing to compare to places like Fremont , Schuyler, and Norfolk .

    Prayers to Families with losses
In Aussie we have a saying "if its flooded don't cross"
too many people lose their life crossing flooded areas not knowing the depth of water

I live 6 blocks from the Eppley airport levee in the soggy bottoms of East Omaha....This is worse than 2011 when those bastard Army corp of engineers tried to drown us by opening gavins point dam all summer long. I moved my Family and cars to higher ground a week ago and I am home sitting to make sure nobody helps themselves to our property.

In 2011, there was flooding in the Missouri river bottom. I-29 was closed from Plattsmouth Nebraska to St Joseph Missouri for 4 months to do to heavy snowfall up north. Gavins Point Dam had to release water. This is by far way worse. We had record breaking snowfalls this year. Then a heatwave and rain and excessive melting in a few short days. Lots of rivers crested and overflowed for about 3 days roughly from the Illinois border to the middle of Nebraska and points beyond. We knew the Missouri River bottom would flood. But not to this degree. The River has been high all summer due to heavy rains all summer and fall. The heavy snowfall hasn`t helped either. Then they are releasing more water from The Gavins Point Dam up north. If traveling threw the area, plan on detours for some time. I am to the east of the river 30 miles out of harms way.

  13. My heart goes out to you midwest guys. I was looking a aerial views on the news and that is some of the worst, expansive flooding I have ever seen. Made worse I supposed by the flat terrain and lack of high ground. Don't take undue chances to save stuff if you need to evacuate.

  15. We're good. The Muddy Mo jumped its banks up @ Parkville where Edye used to work but it does that every year.

  17. My lady is driving to Oregon in June. A lot of the time we shoot a back road to Lincoln Nebraska and catch I-80 right there. this year with the pics that we have seen she is shooting I-70 to Denver then heading north and catching I-80 in Cheyenne.

Grand Island has been saved from high waters due to the Wood River diversion canal. Some of the small towns us are under water though. Wood River had a foot of water all over the town, Dannebrog was worse

My heart goes out to those in the flooded areas . .We lost our business to a flood 7 years ago and wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy...

This is US Hiway 81 about a half mile from our acreage, luckily the flood control project that was built in 1968 has protected the city of Norfolk from floods quite well although it was running nearly to capacity this time around!

Closed roads and soft roads make rural fire fighting challenging to put it mildly.
My worst memory was maintaining position while hovering over a submerged station wagon in a rescue boat while two firefighters attempted to remove the deceased driver.

There is a section on the east side of our town that is low ground. Its not unusual for this area to flood, but the water this year is very high. The city built low income housing in that area many years ago, that housing is elevated about 3' from the surrounding streets, and its pretty normal for the flood water to be in the streets around that housing project. This year, the water level on the street is 7' above the street level. All that housing development is under 4' of water. The water reached its highest point since the 1930s, it has now crested, nearly 12" below the record height, but is expected to remain above flood stage into next week. Maybe the city will build new housing on higher ground this time, why they built the housing on low ground to begin with baffles me. The part of the city we live in is high and dry, as is most of the city except that eastern section.

This probably won't be a good year to go site seeing in the Midwest, unless you want to see destruction every place. Gene

We here in Papillion had a basement utility rm. septic tank back up when an attempt to run the wash machine ( the worst kind) lost carpet on my adjacent man cave room. A word of caution if anyone out there is on a septic system when long periods of freeze are followed by record melting rapid snow pack laterals can be slow to drain, 23 years & never experienced the likes of such.
