I am doing an open fendered hot rod and I wanted to know if anyone has used (and has pictures) of a column mounted shifter. I am doing a 1931 5 window Oldsmobile and I would like to use a 1953 Olds steering column to mount up with my Olds 350 turbo 3 speed. I can not figure out the linkage to use a column mount. I know Lokar makes a floor mount that I can use with my 350 but I would rather have a column shifter. Any thoughts? BC
Many early rods used column shifts. Why, because they were the "New, modern" way to go. Early Chevy(40s-50s) or Ford(40-48 or a little) columns have the shift stuff mounted to the column tube rather than the complicated internal tubes and collars of the later cars.
the 50-54 Chevy car powerglide, and 50s Chevy truck hydramatic shifters bolt on top of the column and might be adaptable. http://chevy.tocmp.com/1929_54chevyparts/04/247.HTM although the parts might be a tad hard to find these days
I'm using a 48 Ford column to shift my turbo 350. I simply used one of the column shift arms and a rod to the transmission. I may add an indicator and additional detents later. It frees up a lot of floor space.
Lokar sells a kit ... that works with a Turbo 350 ... everything you need ... the lever off the transmission, the rod and the adjustable ends. Shane T ( @ Southern Rods sold me mine )
I used the Lokar rod deal with my limeworks column. I adapted a mid fifties ford p/u column shift to this. I had to bend the rod to clear things underneath, but it works real nice.
