I am building a 31 chevy with a 455 olds and 200r4 and want to use a floor shifter. Is lokar the only way to go? They are a little pricey. I have heard of another brand but dont know what it is anybody got any ideas?

How far do you need to shift the floor?

there are at least a million threads about floor shifters. you can search lokar, gennie, and the new american shifter.....

We use Lokar and only Lokar.

On the Locar: Do you have to lift to shift?

I have a 700R4 in my present coupe, and a Lokar shifter. You have to press the center of the knob to shift it. I have gotten used to it, and like it. You can buy an adapter where you press down on the knob to shift, some like that. I like it the way it is....
I understand the Gennie has left-to-right detents, some like that. But if you have an auto, how often do you shift anyway? I am used to the Lokar and would use it in my next build, seems like a quality item, very firm and solid in the shifts.

By the way, you have a 200-4R......

I think with Gennie and Lokar you have to push a button on the knob. With American Shifter you can push a button or go with their gate style. With B&M's hotrod shifter you have to push the shifter down (not a knob push button). I believe that any of the knob push button versions limit you to using only a few of the vendor's knobs vs. being able to chose a custom knob of your choice. Correct me if I'm wrong.
