I'm wanting to update the exhaust on my Biscayne and was wondering about something. Right now it has 2" pipes with flowmaster 50 series mufflers on it. I want to go to 2 1/2" pipes. My question is this- are there any internal differences in the flowmasters from one size to the other. I checked the website and the case size is the same no matter what the pipe size is. So i was thinking i could just cut the reducers on each end and weld my new pipes on. Does this make sense? I was just thinking if I didn't have to buy new mufflers, the money could be spent on other stuff.
We only stocked the 2-1/4" flowmasters. When doing a larger system just cut the cone off at the aproppriate diameter.
I see no reason why not. Just cut the inlet & outlet closer to the muffler where they start to flare out at the shell. I have done this before, but you`re gonna have to weld the pipe into the cut neck since there won`t be enough meat left to let you clamp. Don`t try to swedge them out you`ll only split the neck. You can also weld stub adapters to the muffler with the right neck size if you wish to clamp it. The later is probably what I would do! FWIW
The differences are by series not by inlet size. They are very sensitive to tail pipe size. It's easy to really change the sound of them.
what does what as far as changing sound? bigger pipe makes....? deeper sound or smaller pipe into and larger out. just wondering how,or what? dumb question i know, but?
My exp. has been that a smaller pipe is like putting a potato in the pipe. It will reduce the sound significantly. I had a 3" on a 2.5" muffler also. It added more of the normal flowmaster sound. I've got cones on my truck. That also made a difference. It sounds like just about every street rod you've ever heard.
Thanks for the info guys, I thought it would work, but wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking something.
