It was exactly like that, works real good on downhills too, just shut the key off for a short time, then back on and you'll get a hell of a bang, and it CAN make your muffler louder, depending on the muffler, or even spit a pipe if they're ready to go anyway. To make it even better, do it at about 3 am when p***ing your old principals house!:D
Oh yeah, make sure you don't have a locking steering column unless the road is really straight!

I put flowmasters on my F-150 (351 C) and it sounds like ****. I put Dynomax race bullets on my Dodge, right after the header with about 2 ft of total exhaust and turndowns. 3 of my neighbors have complained about the noise. It's awesome.

FWIW I have Flowmaster 40 with a 3 1/2 pipe and an H cross over on my Big block. Sounds fantastic outside the car but it is too quite inside the car for my liking.

I have a sound file if you are interested.

I have flowmasters on my daily '80's pickup, 302. It's the 40 series, but it's still pretty quiet with the cats on there. It sounds good winding out the gears, but not too loud going down the road, which is what I want on a daily driver.

I've got smithys with 1 3/4 pipe on my flathead, muffers are real close to the headers with long tailpipes. Sounds great!

I've got turbo mufflers on my other302, right before the rear axle. It's pretty loud. They sound good, but are pretty loud even riding at speed down the road. They have a decent tone to them, and aren't obnoxiously loud.

I had flowmasters on a 502 powed rod and it sounded great. I had them on a 283 - hated it - I couldn't get them cut off fast enought to go with gl*** packs.

I built custom exhaust systems for a living ,have for over 20 years ... there is not a better muffler out there for performance and the " sound " than flowmasters ! go with 2 1/2 inch tubing , 50 series are quieter than 40 series , 30`s are LOUD ! It all depends on what YOU want , your ride ! ......ratso

I have always used Thrush gl*** packs. They sound the best when located either directly before or after the axle. The farther back, the deeper the rumble, I have found.

I have 40 series Flowmasters on my prostreet 68 Dart GTS and I love the sound. Its running headers and 3" dual exhaust. Not tinny at all, but a real nice thump and roar. However, after riding in the car for about an hour my ears will ring for several hours afterward. Its actually louder in the car than outside it. I have used the 40 series on several vehicles and found the sound varied based on how radical the engine is, pipe size, and where the mufflers are placed. Listen around for a sound you like, ask the owner questions and then duplicate what they have. That takes the guess work out of it!

My buddy has monte ss mufflers on his 57 and that is the exact sound I want on my 47. Real quiet with just a slight rumble. But then again, I want the 47 a LOT quieter cuz I already have one car that makes my ears bleed! :D
