Hey, Anyone know how flash this book is, by the looks its outa print etc (1955 ish ? ), I have been offereed a copy and could be keen to get it just wondering if its worth it ??
I have a copy of Floyd Clymers - Souping The Stock Engine - that came out in 1950. Lots of info and photos of Ardun, and Riley overheads, Flathead & inline speed equipment etc. Back in the 1950's Floyd Clymer was the only guy publishing books on the automotive hobbies, early restoration, Hot Rods and racing. His INDY 500 yearbooks are real collector items. I've often wondered how many books he published, bet it is close to 50.
Cad into Ford or Merc,Nailhead, also, lots of traditional stuff. If it's the book I've got,I just love to read how it was done.Hell yeah, get that book
It's pretty good, little pages size. The worst part is seeing all those cool parts that you can't find or can't afford !
you got a copy simon ? what kinda bux is o.k. to pay (in your opinion) ? I would imagine it got good Olds stuff ?
$25 is ok, $40 is maybe a bit high (but I don't recall ever seeing another one for sale here). It definitely has some Olds stuff. I can check mine tonight and let you know, if you want. Or I can just copy the Olds section for you if you would prefer
I've got a copy of Floyd's souping the stock engine I'm willing to part with, I'm open to offers. It is really cool.
Thx Simon, Let me know whats in there, tempted to own it myself if its good and cheap, sounds like you have ben busier then me, nearest I got to my car recently is chasing a rat in the garage the other night (I kid you not) hopefully the rat******** is getting fat on the poison as we speak !!!! Glad you liked the DVD and no I'm not real surprised, but if you were I musta suceeded.
I've got an old Peterson puiblication that has an article by Floyd. In it he consults Andy Granatelli and they soup up a 49 Ford coupe then drag it against Caddy's etc.( the Ford wins) Its way cool! I really like his writting style...
i've got an engine swap manual from '58,not clymer though.paid $15 U.S. for it on ebay, but there isn't anything in it i couldn't find out on the hamb.they usually don't have much in the way of detailed pictures, and the text isn't all that helpful either.if there's a swap you need info for i'll gladly scan the book i've got for you,it's more collectable than useful IMHO-george
'50's engine swap books, articles, and the little letter responses in the back of HRM are the best reading there is! The Ancients knew no fear, and NOTHING was impossible! There are several early books on this covering all the most used engines and chassis, and they are all pretty good as well as interesting. Some day (now about 3.7 lifetimes along the to-do list) I want to index all the engine swap stories and letters in the early mags. People like Don Franciso of HRM knew and had done everything--some guy from East Overshoe, North Dakota would write in "I have a '52 Kaiser Dragon, and my buddy just wrecked his Desoto, and ..." and Don would spew out a detailed summary, right down to how far to bend the steering arm and the fact that a Merc station wagon with overdrive happened to have exactly the right driveshaft if you put on a Studebaker yoke...absolutely awesome stuff.
Geez Paul - are you turning into some kind of rat rodder I checked out my copy. The only real Olds specific stuff is a chapter on swapping one into a 49-53 Ford. But there is still plenty of good info and some cool photos.
Rat rodder, nah I found one of them in the garage the other day, lettle******** better be eating the bait I left em or its 15min with the Olds running and the garage all closed up, that oughta fix the b'stard..... Figure I better grab it if I can, might be handy in the one day model A plans I guess. Catch up with you soon, you comming over to our clubrooms for drinks in a week or 3 ?
