While driving on the freeway I seem to be having this flutering sound. its about when I get above 60 sound starts up. I let of the gas and and let it settle then I let it drop to about 55 and the fluttering stops. The sound is like a fluter fluter fluter really fast. It might be because it is running lean maybe I don't know. Im stumped. Just these past few days its been doing this.
Well that's a NEW term I never heard before ! Can you give a better term or description ? Now are you talking about the engine stumbling , missing , surging or what ? Does it feel like it's running out of gas ? Jim
yes, Like its stumbling or running out of gas. The past 3 nights on my way home from work. Last night I hooked up my vacuum gauge and it was saying the timing was off, so I checked it with my timing light, and it was off by a little bit so I reset the timing. This I did when the engine was still warm. I also richened it up at the mixture a tiny bit. ran smoother today but still, like it was running out of gas.And it only does it at a certain point on my way home but the rest of the way home runs and Idles fine. It only occurs for like 5 or 10 seconds.
OK that's a lot better . What carb are we talking about ? A Holley or an aftermarket 4 bbl ? What fuel pressure are you running ? If the timing & carb adjustments helped some , try 2 or 3 more degrees on the timing and see what happens . Have you checked the float level ? When was the last time the carb was rebuilt ? Also check your fuel filter . Just trying to cover all the obvious things first . Jim
its a holley the one that came with the car. feul pressure 3 1/2 to 4. carb rebuil was 2 years ago. Ill check the filter but I just put a new one on. It only happened for like 5 seconds.
With the ****py ethanol fuel we use I have seen more carbs get dirt and other **** from that fuel plus the fuel is hard on gaskets . The fuel pressure is OK . If you have a regulator , try 3 lbs and see how that does . If you decide to rebuild the carb , they are so easy to do ! They have to be the easiest carb to learn to rebuild on ! Also Try giving the carb a good leaning in side ! let me know how you make out . Jim
Okay, So I brought my manual with me to lunch today and ran across this I ran my check as far as feul, timing, feul pressure those seem fine. I think its the coil or the ballast resistor or possibly the distributor. I asked another fellow today and he explained to me that if there is a load on the coil or ballast resistor it builds up power up to a certain point and when it exceeds that it causes that misfire for a brief moment. which explains when I was at 60 mph it happened only for a brief moment. As soon as I let of the gas and continued on my way the load decreased. Therefore bad ballast resistor or bad coil hopefully not the distributor. What do you think nea or yeah.
is your coil 12v? if so then you can get by without the ballast resistor but i dont recommend it. i'm having the opposite problem..my car runs great at 60mph but flutters at 20mph to idle..i've been messing with the timing and the carb and i can get the vacuum gauge to read about 16 but i'm still in the red (late engine timing)
